Thank you again for your support of the Brazil Flood Relief Fund. Donations to this GlobalGiving Fund are making a lasting difference by providing emergency relief and long-term support to communities affected by the devastating floods in April and May. The Brazil Flood Relief Fund has recently disbursed its second round of emergency grants to our trusted partners in Brazil’s southern Rio Grande do Sul state. . These donations are powering several high-impact, community-led nonprofits that continue to respond long after the initial media coverage had ended.

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported:

    • Fundo Casa Socioambiental, a São Paulo-based partner,  connects local civil society organizations to communities so they can work together to advance environmental, social, and civil rights in South America, as well as respond to emergencies. Fundo Casa has recently launched its Rebuild RS (Rio Grande do Sul) Fund in response to the floods, which aims to support community livelihood recovery initiatives, invest in the restoration of family food systems and agroecology, improve community infrastructure, and support psychosocial and emotional healing for flood-affected communities.
    • APUSA is a Porto Alegre-based partner focused on education and livelihoods. With their emphasis on education, they continue to respond to the floods by rebuilding schools, ensuring ongoing education through remote classroom facilitation, and offering basic services to students and their families. APUSA is also offering first aid support for families with infants who lost their homes and resources for infant care.
    • Instituto do Câncer Infantil is a Porto Alegre-based organization with more than 30 years of experience serving children with cancer and their families across the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Their team has assessed the needs of 86 families and continues to conduct outreach  and ensure ongoing support to children and families  in the impacted flood zones.  The Instituto’s volunteers continue to relocate patients and provide medications, mattresses, and conduct  broad casework support for families with housing loss and damage through a WhatsApp helpline for families.
    • Themis - Genero, Justiça e Direitos Humanosis a Porto Alegre-based organization typically focused on discrimination against women in the Brazil justice system. When the floods came, they relaunched their humanitarian aid program created during the pandemic. Themis is working with its network of female community leaders to assess the impact of the floods. They are distributing food, water, and hygiene kits to impacted communities and are contributing to the reconstruction of damaged houses based on their findings. Since they began responding to the floods, Themis has been working closely with communities in low-income areas of Porto Alegre to help them understand their resources and rights as they recover from the floods.
    • Ong Parceiros Voluntarios is avolunteer-based partner in Porto-Alegre engaged in environmental restoration in low-income communities. Their team has been working hard in collaboration with other local charities and governmental institutions to distribute emergency supplies, hygiene kits, and food items to communities affected by the floods.
    • Sitawiis a Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo-based partner with more than 16 years of experience developing financial infrastructure for the social sector in Brazil. Sitawi supports low income communities throughout the Amazon through the implementation of microfinance loans for small business owners and initiatives.

Your support of the GlobalGiving Brazil Flood Relief Fund powers community-led organizations to provide immediate relief and sustain critical support to the communities whose lives were upended during these devastating floods.

We will continue to share additional updates on our response in this space on all the great work that your support mobilizes.

As always, thank you for your continued support to local-led, community-based organizations responding to disaster and empowering the communities they serve!

With gratitude,

Alli + The GlobalGiving Tea

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
