Flooding has caused widespread destruction across the country, displacing thousands of people, and the situation is expected to worsen. Brazil is grappling with persistent flooding worsened by El Nino, known for bringing intense rainfall to the southern region. In Rio Grande do Sul, the situation has worsened significantly with the collapse of a hydroelectric dam after days of heavy rainfall and flooding. Approximately 500,000 people are cut off from electricity and clean water.
All donations to this fund will support flood-affected communities in Brazil, with a priority focus on the most disadvantaged and overlooked communities. Initially, the fund will help first responders meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, medicine, and shelter. It will also support longer-term recovery efforts run by local, vetted organizations in impacted areas, particularly those working with low-income, historically underserved communities.
