beYoureyeS Monthly Newsletter 2020-09

In September, beYoureyeS carried out 4 regular weekend activities, 3 CSR activities and 3 specials; made 1 event announcement; organized 2 accessible theater events; and got invited to 2 cultural exchange events.

THE BIGGEST NEWS

Zhiai Cinema Accessible Movies Resumed

On September 30th, over ten Lanjingling members were invited to attend the Resumption Ceremony. Following a speech by the representative of Shanghai Film Distribution and Exhibition Corporation and Shanghai Motion Pictures Corporation, Xiaobin from beYoureyeS took the floor to deliver a speech as a representative of the visually impaired community.

As the chief executor of the For love Cinema Project, Lanjingling will partake the responsibility to conduct accessible movie-screening activities and accessible service training sessions for staff members.

After the ceremony, Lanjingling members enjoyed the accessible version of the movie ‘Me and My Home Town’.

The First Ever Copyrighted Public Release of Commercial Accessible Movie

On October 5th, 16 visually impaired Lanjingling members and 8 volunteers watched the new blockbuster movie ‘Vanguard’. This was the first copyrighted public release of a commercial movie in the nation. In the same screening room there were ordinary audiences who have individually purchased the tickets, they probably haven’t noticed the historic significance of that seemingly average movie screening.

It was a life-first-ever experience for most of the visually impaired audiences on the day. Later they commented: this form of movie watching really allows for thorough understanding of the actors’ specific motions, and allows us to anticipate and enjoy the newest films with our family members aside.

REGULAR WEEKEND ACTIVITIES

beYoureyeS 213th to 216th regular weekend activities were carried out on September 6th, 13th, 20th, and 26th respectively in Century Park and Minhang Cultural Park. Specifically, the 215th regular activity on September 20th was carried out in Minhang Cultural Park, and the other three were carried out in both Pudong and Puxi simultaneously.

In September, four people passed the assessment to become Dabai Guide Runner.

1 Visually impaired runner joined in September 20th regular weekend activity.

RACES

2020 Rope100is starting

Still fresh in our minds are the off the mark horns, the puddle trains, the persistence, and the riveting acclamations at the end of the race in the 2019 ‘100km on ropes’ relay charity race.

2020 ‘100km on ropes’, the stakes are high, you dare to accept the challenge?!

We will be releasing more details in our future posts, sign up and join!

CSR ACTIVITIES

beYoureyeS’ Promotion at Apple

On September 4th, 4 members of Lanjingling went to Apple Inc for Apple’s Midday Charity Event. As our long-time partner, ‘beYoureyeS’ guide running activities are deeply popular among members of Apple Inc.

The goal of this trip was to educate and promote the concept of accessibility. We encourage members of Apple Inc to participate in beYoureyeS activities in the future.

CSR activity with Swiss Army Knife Company

On September 18th, in the beautifully landscaped Chang Feng Park, Lanjingling was invited to attend a team-building event with Swiss Army Knife Company. Surrounding the theme of ‘adventures’, members of Lanjingling shared their experiences and insights into the daily adventures of going out without accompaniment for visually impaired people. Then they invited them to step into the shoes of a visually impaired person to get a first-handed experience into this special form of adventure.

In the indistinct autumn rain, three groups of Lanjingling training partners led the Swiss Knife members to practice daily protocols with the visually impaired and the techniques of guide-running. Then the participants entered a mini guide-running competition and a toy-passing game.

The respect for the disabled community propagated like the raindrops, warming the hearts of everyone along.

CSR Activity with Apple Inc

During the regular weekend activity on the 26th of September, about a dozen members from different sectors of Apple Inc attended the special CSR activity.

For that session, the host mainly focused on the protocols and habits of the Visually Impaired, we hope that our participants will use what they’ve learned to provide necessary assistance to instances where disabled people are in need for help.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Fitness 100” Fitness Project Lanched!

On September 9th World Philanthropy Day, a charity fitness event was carried out in ‘The Core’s’ fitness gym. The date was a coincidence, but the wish of hosting an adaptive sports & fitness event was long-rooted.

Our members are all quite adaptive when it comes to trying out new things, and beYoureyeS is also willing to explore the different options of accessible adaptive sports activities. In the gym, they handled fitness equipment that they’ve never tried before and learned extra knowledge about fitness and sports.

On the 23rd of September, the second session of ‘Fitness 100’ was carried out as scheduled. There attended 3 visually impaired members. Judging their body conditions and needs, Coach Aidon arranged individual exercise schemes involving chest press, pull-ups, and stretching.

On the 29th of September, the third session of ‘Fitness 100’ was carried out in Core’s as scheduled.

Lanjingling invited to attend the US Shanghai Embassy Cultural Event

On the 24th of September, Annie and Ken arrived at the US Embassy in Shanghai to attend an invitational banquet.

Lanjingling's Colorful Lives

Mid-Autumn Festival Picnic

On September 20th, the autumn breeze was refreshing, golden osmanthus fragrant, and Lanjingling ushered in the Pudong Puxi Grand Gala in September in the beautiful Minhang Cultural Park, and there was an exciting Mid-Autumn Festival picnic for hundreds of people.

Ms. Hong gave a brief introduction to the growth process of Lanjingling. Jiyuan said that our life is actually a line that repeats every day. Every small activity of Lanjingling is like a small pearl, and every big activity is A big pearl, countless large and small pearls connect our lives into a beautiful pearl necklace.

We have grown up together in this big family for more than five years. Now, the second generation of small lanjingling have lined up to pass on the friendship and strength here with us!

Let us look forward to the next five years and ten years of Lanjingling...It is equally exciting, because one person affects a group of people, and a group of people can affect a city...

Nowadays, on many tracks, parks, and gyms in Shanghai, you can see guider runners stay with visually impaired partners, fitness, swimming, karate, learning English, understanding nature... We all explore this together the infinite possibilities of the world.

When the Nation’s Anthem Ring, Joyous Union Lan-jing Ling

On September 26th, during the 216th Regular Weekend Activity, Uncle Bao prepped the backstage props: number ‘71’ for 71st National Holiday; 4 large letter prints of ‘Long Live Motherland’; and a huge National Flag. Though it seemed like it wasn’t enough of a celebration: many even had flag stickers on their faces!

When the bright smiles and the happy flags freeze-frame, when the blessing hearts and the heartful blessings much gain… They cheered and yelled in jubilance: ‘Happy National Anniversary! Go Lanjingling! Long Live Motherland!’

Surprising and incredible were the near-national-holiday birthdays of Boshu, Lihao,  and Yier, and of course, Lanjingling members planned surprises for them. Tao and Ms.Hong made two amazing hand-made birthday cakes, for which every pigment and embellishment is a deliberate choice with profound meanings. Wish the three many happy returns.

Who has ever imagined, that we would all be living in the shadows of the COVID19 outbreak right at the start of this lunar new year? These days, some have been battling the virus at the frontline, some have been working from home, and others have rested in this dreadful winter. Our minds and bodies are intruded by all sorts of emotions: fear, anger, anguish, hopelessness...
14 days has passed, whereas there is 14 days to come. Yet, we ordinary people still have lots of things to do, even in such disorder and chaos. For instance, we can keep in smooth emotion, learn a new skill, value every bit of interest in life and show love and care to people around us, rather than wast any time and lose some of the most precious days of our lives. Last but not least, we are expected to wait for that moment when we can once again, indulgently inhale the fresh air, and run forward hand in hand.

At 2:00 pm, January 16, beYoureyeS and Shanghai Charity Foundation carried out the first accessibility training for staff members from the 50 cinemas that will be the pioneers of accessible movie industry, “The Third Soundtrack”.

Guotai Cinema Accessible Guidance Training

In the forenoon of January 22, four Lanjingling trainers went to Guotai Cinema to give nine of its staff an accessible guidance training.

It’s been years since Guotai Cinema first began displaying specialized films for visually impaired individuals, hence most of staffs have some insight into visual impairment and accessibility, but they still have uncertainties on how to safely and correctly guide visually impaired individuals. Lanjingling trainers answered these questions instructively, teaching them the aims and the right methods of accessible guidance through vocalized sharing and interactive practices.

Lanjingling Watched the trial release Accessible Version of Lost in Russia

On January 23, around 10 Lanjingling and their family members arrived at Palace Cinema-IAPM to witness the trial release of the accessible version of newly released blockbuster Lost in Russia.

Members of Lanjingling put on their headphones and listened to the live narration by “The third soundtrack” along with the movie’s original soundtrack, authentically “envisioning” actions on screen and experiencing what was previously perceived as visible only.

It was the first group of audiences to experience accessible movies in China, listening through headphones pre-recorded soundtracks, equally experiencing the join and excitement brought by movies.

Sourced from Xinmin Latenight Newspaper

How are they made?

First the manufacturer company needs to approve copyrights and provide materials (Including Footage and Soundtrack), then, specialized editors have to write language scripts to convey elements of the film that could only be visually received.

This is then followed by the vocalization of the script by professional narrators, which is recorded and preserved as a singular voicetrack, eventually being combined and edited using professional servers and software. And then came the birth of an “Accessible movie”

She recorded her authentic feeling afterwards, in a short article named “Patience and Trust”, it reads: “With thorough communication, even someone that you’ve never met before can bring you the feeling of safeness, in which is the fundamentality of trust.”

On June 16, Lanjingling and colleagues of IBM joined in Gucun Park for a variety of splendid activities including running around central lake, kayaking, a picnic and a thought-sharing session of sport accessibility. (detailed information will be provided in the following content)

On June 23, Lanjinglin went to Huangpu Riverside park, located between Nanpu bridge and Lupu Bridge. The ruddy runway, the refreshingly savory air breezes, the brilliant blue sky, all made us extra vigorous.

2 new participants with visual impairments joined us this time. We believe that visually impaired people should not be housebound while freely participate in sports and society, which have positive impact on everyone whether visually impaired or unimpaired. We will encourage more people with visual impairments who love life and want to exercise to join us in advocating a fully accessible world.

SCHOOL INCLUSIVE ACTIVITY

June 5, Lanjingling sharing session was promoted in Shanghai Student Affairs Center.

Mrs. Yin said that when contacting with visually impaired people, we should not only have the enthusiasm to run with them, but also have the patience to communicate with them. It's necessary to encourage them and develop empathy. However, at the same time we should directly point out their shortcomings like family and friends. Meanwhile, Mrs. Yin also shared a sense of carefulness and warmness from her visually impaired partners.

In Langjingling community, we hope that all participants can use the power of the hearts and minds as eyes to communicate and to support, not leaving anyone behind the social development of our world.

CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) ACTIVITIES

beYoureyeS & IBM CSR month

Time transients, unwittingly the CSR activity that we perform with IBM had been running for four consecutive years. Every year, the vigor and enthusiasm of IBM colleagues have been the backbone of this activity and their desire to promote sports accessibility deeply affect everyone.

On June 16, a series of various and wonderful CSR activities were held in Gucun Park, including sharing the idea of sport accessibility, running around the lake, kayaking and picnic.

After two weeks of regular weekend activities and training in advance, IBM colleagues ran with our visually impaired runners and certified guide runners together as internship guide runners around the lake.

For the two-man kayaking activity, Mr. Yan, a senior visually impaired person who was a professional kayaking athlete in college, joined one of our guide runners, Uncle Bao, on one boat. Despite their elder age, they travelled in light speed and showed out all of us, who watched with astonishment.

This water sports proved that the blind and visually impaired people are able to do most sports with safety guidance and proper adjustment.

The day ended with a special picnic, with everyone bringing their own home-made delicacies and wines and joy.

Apple China's 2018-2019 CSR annual report mentioned beYoureyeS

Apple China recently released its 2018-2019 CSR annual report. The theme of which is: Making the world a better place for everyone to participate and benefit everyone. On page 80, it mentioned that Apple volunteers participated in beYoureyeS activities, learning the proper way to guide visually impaired persons to support them to live better without stereotype and barriers.

YOGA ACTIVITY

Lanjingling conducted yoga activity again

On the morning of June 29, Ms. Karen, a professional and beautiful yoga mentor, engaged with the members of Lanjingling through a specially customized yoga course. Everyone did it in the dark, in other words, unimpaired participates need to had patches on.

Ms. Karen elaborately designed special Yoga poses for running enthusiasts and guided us with patience and care. “Move your center of mass onto the position of your big toes, and slowly lift your heels…”. Under her precise guidance, everyone performed safely and fluently.

Ms. Karen then guided each of us one by one so that everyone could experience the authenticity of Yoga in the dark. Those with no visual impairment got a chance to fully explore the senses and feel the aesthesia of inner-self.

It's obvious that the sudden darkness may hinder guide runners to complete their movements when trying to do Yoga. But, everyone had potential power in which would be better excavated and utilized through the communication of your mind with your body when doing Yoga with full concentration.

Thanks Ms. Karen, we look forward to our next Yoga activity.

Lanjingling got invited to attend the US National Day celebration event

On June 27, 2019, founder of beYoureyeS, Annie and Ken were honored to be invited to attend the 243rd Anniversary of Independence Day of the United States of America and the 40 Years of Diplomatic Relations between the United States and China. The vibrant exchange of interest between artists, dancers and football athletes brought infinite joy to the venue. On behalf of "beYoureyeS", Annie and Ken deposited our lovely wish on the “Wish Tree”.

GOOD NEWS !!!GOOD NEWS !!! GOOD NEWS !!!

On June 30, 2019, a new couple in our community got married with a big ceremony! This has been the fifth marriage of our members since the creation of beYoureyeS in 2015.

Ken and Annie, representing Lanjingling, attended the weddingwitnessed the most touching and exciting moment of Mr. Li Gang and Ms. Chen Xiaoling.

As the chief marriage witness, Ken read out the Witness Speech that was written by Annie, to deliver their best wishes. Let’s conclude the post using one of the sentences in the Witness Speech.

……

"From the day they met in a beYoureyeS regular weekend running activity, they became mutually concomitant. Together, they attended lots of beYoureyeS activities, joined the visually impaired runners in countless races, and spent tremendous efforts in contributing to this community. They brought the others the future, brightness and the hope.

……

Let’s congratulate this couple: in the future, to have your stars and oceans and your own children, hope you can deliver those charming and powerful stories, transmit the spirit of our community to the next generation, and bring hopeful brightness to more and more individuals."

Thanks for your reading. We will see you next month.

Postscript: both translators of our editing team are actually really young. Hongyi Wang is still a middle school student, his mother has been a certified guide runner for more than three years, witnessing his growth from a childish boy to a responsible young adult; Neville is currently a senior college student in English major. Since she is a visually impaired person, she has authentic experiences and plentiful thoughts regarding the confluent education and diversity employment of visually impaired people. After last year’s Lanjingling vocational-education training for people with visual impairments, she ended her narrative journal with the famous Chinese proverb: “The rise and fall of the world is everybody's concern and business.” The younger generation builds our future, in this future, there will be glimmers even in darknesses.
