Between the Lines Fall 2013
By Deanna Seibold | Community VP
Between the Lines is off to a great start for the 2013-2014 Junior League year. This year Between the Lines will continue to work closely with Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville and Santiam Correctional Institution in Salem. The reading dates have already been scheduled for the year and we look forward to reaching out to more children in the process.
Our first reading was a couple of weeks ago at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility where we had 29 mothers reading to 56 children. In November we will be heading to Santiam Correctional Institute to read with the fathers. After Santiam we'll order the books and gift wrap them for the kids. They will have them in time for the holidays. Many mothers at Coffee Creek expressed gratitude that their reading is allowing them to send a Christmas gift to their child.
We are incredibly thankful to you for supporting Between the Lines' efforts in breaking the cycle of incarceration, strengthening family ties, and promoting early childhood literacy. We look forward to sharing more positive results with you throughout the coming year!

Between the Lines is off to a good start for the 2013-2014 Junior League year. This year Between the Lines will continue to work closely with Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville and Santiam Correction Institution in Salem. The reading dates have already been scheduled for the year and we look forward to reaching out to more children in the process. Our first reading in October is just around the corner. In addition to readings at correctional facilities, the committee will look into reaching out to other opportunities, including Ronald McDonald House. The committee will also plan and execute an annual book fair at Barnes and Nobel Bookstore at Bridgeport Village. The book fair date is tentatively set for December of this year and will help Between the Lines collect books donations to be used for future readings. Another goal of the committee this year is to make the mission of Between the Lines clear to members within Junior League and within the community.
The first Between the Lines committee meeting is scheduled for the second Thursday in August. The committee is comprised of a strong group of members, including three returning member and eight new members. At this meeting members will become acquainted and familiarized with the goals of Between the Lines for the 2013-2014 year. A more informative and detailed meeting is tentatively scheduled for late August. The Between the Lines Committee is excited for an eventful and productive year!

Between the Lines Spring Report
By Sara Berglund | Fund Development VP
In January, we had an event at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility where we had a pilot reading of recordable books. These books are primarily for younger children and have recorders already placed in them. The readers seemed to enjoy them very much. If we do decide to formally introduce them into our BTL library, it will be done slowly as they are much more expensive than our regular books.
Throughout the year, we have been working diligently on trying to measure the “impact” we are making through our program. In February, we sent out our first family survey to the caretakers of the children who have received books and CDs this year. We wanted to hear from them firsthand to see how we are affecting the children. Here are some comments from those surveys.
Spring 2013
We ended 2012 strong with a fantasticBook Fair at Barnes and Noble onDecember 8. Our wonderful supportersspent close to $3500 that day and BTLgot 20% of those proceeds. This moneywill be used towards expanding ourlibrary of children’s books!
Pilot reading of Recordable Books:
Impact Feedback:
“Hearing Mommy’s voice on the CD anytime he wants is nurturing. They love to share books in person, so any reading experience for them helps strengthen this bond”
“Thank you for giving this lovely service! It warms the hearts ofMother, child and all our family members. Your support is one more vital part of family connectedness and rehabilitation. We love you and thank you for your kindness and generosity.”
BTL’s accomplishments so far:
- 3 correctional facility readings
We will have another upcoming reading in April at Coffee Creek. Salem’s Journal Statesman is interested in doing an article about Between The Lines. A journalist and a photographer will be joining
us for our reading, so we are excited to show them what we do and
spread our mission and impact.
As always, we want to thank you for your continued support! We couldn't do all of this important work without you.
