Chitwan, the place well known for wildlife, natural beauties and a famous tourist destination. A luxury place, where people plan to spend their holiday with families and friends with all the facilities that they look for. But, people living in the hilly areas of the same district are struggling to get basic facilities and services required for their survival.
Syamrang and Sarling are two village localities located at remote hilly areas of Chitwan district, where Chepangs (a tribal community) are still struggling to receive basic survival support. The community still today do not have access to clean and safe drinking water, due to which the health status of the community people is deteriorating. Mr. Santa the local of Syamrang says, “There is no enough water supplies in our village. We have to walk for an hour to reach the water source and wait for around half to one hour to fetch a bucket of water. We do not know whether the water is pure or not but we are using it for our survival. We cannot afford to have water treatment facility to purify the water”.
Mr. Jhyapu (President of the village committee, Syamrang) expresses “The lack of safe drinking water in the village had caused deterioration of health status of the community people, especially children. A health post is established in the village but health workers and medicine are very rarely found. People have to walk for 2-3 hours to get access to health facilities in city areas.”
Hence, ECCA in coordination with UNICA Foundation distributed Tulip Filter treated with silver colloidal solution to 55 houses of Sarling, 87 houses of Syamrang. 4 filters were also provided each to two schools located in both village. People were given orientation on adverse effects of unsafe drinking water, benefits of tulip filters, and methods to use it. Mr. Ganesh (teachers) thanked “The filters will surely help in betterment of health status of school children and community people. Children will be healthy enough and progress in their studies as well.”
