The quality of the water supply in Nepal is always the matter of questioning due to lack of proper treatment system, pollution at the source, no use of disinfection and no proper maintenance of the water distribution system. According to various reports, sanitation-related diseases account for 72% of total ailments and diarrhea continues to be one of the leading causes of childhood deaths in Nepal. On top of that, COVID-19 outbreak has created unprecedented health crisis.
The lack of education and awareness, lack of accessibility of disinfection technologies, and lack of basic WASH (water sanitation and hygiene) infrastructure have aggravated the situation.
ECCA provides access to various technologies, provides orientations on WASH/personal hygiene/hand washing techniques targeting schools and, through them, communities and helps to construct WASH related infrastructure in schools. ECCA also produces active chlorine solution (sodium hypochlorite of 6gm/liter concentration) by using Swiss WATA Technology through electrolysis of common salt solution. So produced chlorine solution can be used for disinfecting drinking water & as a local sanitizer.
Responding towards the immediate need of availability and use of safe and treated water, practice of proper hand washing technique, and WASH facilities, the project will help reduce the possible spread of water borne diseases and COVID-19 as well as change in the behavior of the local community.
