Crescent Academy English School is a locally renowned school of Godawari, Lalitpur. However, with poor drinking water facilities and inadequate budget for their improvement, the school faculty had been struggling to provide sufficient water for the students who were often compelled to leave classes, go home early or fell sick due to consumption of impure water. After finding about the situation, ECCA stepped forward to help the school.
ECCA's intervention in the school includes both hardware support and trainings. Safe drinking water station was constructed in the school premise making the water system well managed. Support of 10 sets of jars and dispensers has provided students immediate access to drinking water in the classroom itself.
"The absence of safe drinking water brought difficulties especially during summer and rainy season. Students reporting the cases of Diarrhoea were frequent. During physical education classes, we struggled to conduct any outdoor activity as there used to be no water if any student felt thirsty", shared one of the teachers. "The situation has now changed with the ECCA support and we feel very relieved."
According to the teachers, decrease in cases of water borne diseases (like diarrhoea) among the students has brought gradual decrease in students' absent rate.
In addition, ECCA has been working with school's nature club. Through training on chlorination production procedure as well as chlorination device support, the club is now producing chlorine solution on their own, which is used in the school for water disinfection.
"We were ignorant about purifying drinking water as we had no proper facilities in the first place", said a nature club member. "But, after gaining knowledge regarding chlorine solution and using it practically, we have developed habit of checking any water before we drink, even outside school."
The support has, in fact, brought awareness and safe drinking water practice among school children. We are very thankful to all of you for your support.
