Be Their Support:Dignity for Older People in Syria

A Project by UMUDU CANLANDIRMA DERNEGI (Hope Revival Organization - HRO)

In the displacement camps of northwest Syria, where harsh terrain and limited infrastructure make daily life a struggle, older people face an added burden: the loss of mobility. For many, a simple walk to fetch water or visit a makeshift clinic is impossible without aid. Thanks to the generous donations collected through GlobalGiving in December 2025 and January 2026, Hope Revival Organization (HRO) is launching a new initiative to restore independence and dignity to the most vulnerable older people in Idlib governorate.

With these funds, we will procure and distribute essential assistive devices—including walking sticks, wheelchairs, and other mobility aids—to older people living in the camps of Kherbet Eljoz, Badama sub-district, Jisr Ash Shugur district. This community, home to thousands of families displaced by conflict, lacks access to even the most basic support for persons with disabilities and chronic conditions.

Our Plan: Delivering Hope, One Device at a Time

In the coming weeks, our field teams will:

  • Identify beneficiaries through our team there, prioritizing those with the greatest need—older people with limited mobility, those recovering from injuries, and individuals with disabilities who cannot afford assistive equipment.
  • Procure quality assistive devices tailored to individual needs, including adjustable walking sticks, sturdy wheelchairs, and other mobility aids such as walkers or crutches.
  • Distribute directly to homes in the camps, ensuring that even those unable to travel receive the support they need. During distribution, our teams will provide basic guidance on safe use and maintenance of the devices.

Why This Matters

For an older person with impaired mobility, a wheelchair or a walking stick is not just a tool; it is a gateway to participation, self-reliance, and hope. It means being able to move outside a tent, attend community gatherings, access latrines, and seek medical care without relying entirely on others. It reduces the risk of falls and injuries, and it alleviates the emotional toll of dependency.

In Kherbet Eljoz and the surrounding camps, where winter rain turns paths to mud, and access to services is limited, these devices will be life-changing. We aim to reach as many older people as possible in this first phase, with a focus on the most marginalized.

Transparency and Accountability

As with all HRO activities, we will maintain strict oversight of the procurement and distribution process. Each beneficiary will be registered, and we will document the distribution with photos and receipts, ensuring full transparency to our donors. We will also continue to integrate messages on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) and provide complaint channels for all beneficiaries.

The Need Continues

While this funding allows us to take a vital step, the demand for assistive devices far exceeds our current resources. Many older people in the camps are still waiting for support. With your continued generosity, we can expand this program to reach more communities and provide additional types of aid, such as hearing aids, eyeglasses, and physiotherapy sessions.

Together, we can ensure that no older person is left behind, that they can move, participate, and live with the dignity they deserve.

Thank you for being their support.
