Be Their Support:Dignity for Older People in Syria

Executive Summary

The “Be Their Support” project remains in its preparatory phase. The donations received through GlobalGiving in December 2025 and January 2026 were not sufficient to launch the planned campaign as originally envisioned. Therefore, we have not yet been able to begin the procurement and distribution of assistive devices to older people.

The project location has been updated to include the villages of Kansaba Sub-district, Al-Haffa District, Latakia Governorate. This change reflects the fact that the majority of residents in Kherbet Eljoz camps are originally from this area.

We remain fully prepared to implement the project once additional funding becomes available. No specific implementation timeline can be provided at this stage, as the launch depends entirely on securing the needed funds.

Progress Made So Far – Preparatory Activities Completed

Even though the campaign has not been launched, the following preparatory steps have been completed:

1. Mapping of Potential Beneficiaries: Our field team has drawn up a list of the older persons facing the greatest need, giving priority to individuals with serious mobility restrictions, those recovering from injuries, and those unable to pay for assistive equipment.
2. Assessment of Suppliers: We have located dependable vendors of good-quality assistive devices, such as adjustable walking canes, robust wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches.
3. Logistics and Distribution Planning: A direct-to-home distribution plan has been developed for the villages, along with beneficiary registration forms and documentation procedures (photos, receipts) to ensure full transparency.
4. PSEA and Complaints Mechanisms: We have developed awareness messages on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) and set up complaint pathways for prospective beneficiaries.

Current Status: Awaiting Additional Funding to Launch

In full transparency toward our donors and supporters:

The funds raised so far are not enough to cover the expenses of buying, transporting, and distributing the assistive devices. To date, no devices have been purchased or distributed. The planned campaign cannot begin until we receive sufficient additional donations.

We are not fixing a particular timeline for implementation, since it depends wholly on when sufficient funding is secured. Our field teams stay on standby, prepared to move as soon as resources allow.

Why Your Continued Support Matters

For an older person with impaired mobility in the target villages of Kansaba Sub-district, Al-Haffa District, Latakia Governorate, a wheelchair or walking stick is not just a tool – it is a gateway to participation, self-reliance, and hope. It means being able to move outside the home, access latrines, seek medical care, and reduce the risk of falls and injuries.

The demand for assistive devices far exceeds our current resources. With your continued generosity, we will be able to launch this campaign and reach the most marginalized older people in Kansaba Sub-district and surrounding villages.

Transparency and Accountability Commitment

Once the campaign is launched with sufficient funding, HRO will maintain strict oversight of procurement and distribution. Every beneficiary will be registered, and we will document distribution with photos and receipts. PSEA messages and complaint channels will be actively implemented.
