Be Their Support Dignity for Older People in Syria

By Sima Berri | Reporting Officer

The "Be Their Support" project remains in its preparatory phase. The donations received through GlobalGiving in December 2025 and January 2026 were not sufficient to launch the planned campaign as originally envisioned. Therefore, we have not yet been able to begin the procurement and distribution of assistive devices to older people in the camps of Kherbet Eljoz, Badama sub-district, Jisr Ash Shugur district in Idlib governorate.

We remain fully prepared to implement the project once additional funding becomes available. No specific implementation timeline can be provided at this stage, as the launch depends entirely on securing the necessary resources.

Progress Made So Far – Preparatory Activities Completed

Although the campaign has not been launched, we have completed the following preparatory steps:

  1. Identification of potential beneficiaries: Our field team has prepared a list of older people most in need, prioritizing those with severe mobility limitations, injury recovery needs, and those who cannot afford assistive equipment.
  2. Supplier assessment: We have identified reliable suppliers for quality assistive devices, including adjustable walking sticks, sturdy wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches.
  3. Logistics and distribution plan: A direct-to-home distribution plan has been developed for the camps, along with beneficiary registration forms and documentation procedures (photos, receipts) to ensure full transparency.
  4. PSEA and complaint mechanisms: We have prepared awareness messages on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) and established complaint channels for future beneficiaries.

Current Status: Awaiting Additional Funding to Launch

To be fully transparent with our donors and supporters:

  • The funds raised to date do not cover the costs required to purchase, transport, and distribute the assistive devices.
  • No devices have been procured or distributed yet.
  • The planned campaign cannot be launched until we receive sufficient additional donations.

We are not setting a specific timeline for implementation, as this depends entirely on when adequate funding becomes available. Our field teams remain on standby, ready to act as soon as resources permit.

Why Your Continued Support Matters

For an older person with impaired mobility in the displacement camps of northwest Syria, a wheelchair or walking stick is not just a tool – it is a gateway to participation, self-reliance, and hope. It means being able to move outside a tent, access latrines, seek medical care, and reduce the risk of falls and injuries.

The demand for assistive devices far exceeds our current resources. With your continued generosity, we will be able to launch this campaign and reach the most marginalized older people in Kherbet Eljoz and surrounding camps.

Transparency and Accountability Commitment

Once the campaign is launched with sufficient funding, HRO will maintain strict oversight of procurement and distribution. Every beneficiary will be registered, and we will document distribution with photos and receipts. PSEA messages and complaint channels will be actively implemented.
