Case study - Mr. Aakash (name changed)
Mr. Aakash, a 16-year-old boy from Karenahalli Village and Post, Doddaballapura Taluk, residing in Bengaluru Rural, was admitted to NIMHANS on February 2, 2025, where he was diagnosed with meningioma. Despite intensive medical intervention, he did not respond to treatment and was declared brain dead on February 4, 2025.
On the same day at 9:00 AM, a team from MOHAN Foundation, comprising Mrs. Ranjini Shankar and Mr. Nagendra, along with Mr. Hari Shankar and Ms. Stemmy from the Psychiatry Social Work Department at NIMHANS, was authorized to counsel Aakash’s family about organ donation. The counselling sessions took place in the NSICU, where the team provided emotional support, helped the family navigate their grief, and addressed their concerns with compassion and care.
Aakash’s passing was particularly difficult for his family, as he was the youngest child. The team patiently explained the concept of brain death, the extensive medical efforts made to save him, and the life-changing impact of organ donation. After three rounds of counselling and extensive discussions among approximately 14 family members, the family consented to organ donation on February 5, 2025, at 12:30 PM.
Key family members involved in the decision-making process included his parents—Mr. Sunder Raj and Mrs. Latha—as well as his elder sister, Pallavi, who is pursuing her third year of engineering.
The first brain death declaration was made on February 5, 2025, at 9:55 AM, followed by the second declaration at 9:40 PM on the same day. The organ retrieval procedure was successfully conducted on February 6, 2025.
Following the family’s consent, Aakash’s organs were allocated to multiple recipients, bringing hope and renewed life to several individuals. Both kidneys were transplanted at INU Hospital, Bengaluru, while his liver was allocated to Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru. His heart valves were donated to Jayadeva Hospital, Bengaluru, and his corneas were retrieved and sent to Minto Hospital, Bengaluru, restoring vision to those in need. However, his heart was not retrieved due to a low ejection fraction (EF) percentage, and his lungs could not be utilized due to a low PF ratio.
Aakash’s father described him as a loving and courageous child, who was a protective shield for his family members. His sudden loss was deeply felt by his loved ones. Despite their grief, the family’s selfless decision to donate his organs brought hope, life, and healing to multiple individuals. Their generosity is profoundly commendable and serves as an inspiration to many.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Aakash’s family and pray for their strength and well-being during this difficult time.
