Case Study- Ms. Archana (Name Changed)
Ms. Archana, a vibrant 17-year-old from Bengaluru, arrived at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) on August 19, 2024, diagnosed with a severe neurological condition: Right MCA Territory Infarct with Mass Effect, causing a Midline Shift.
Though doctors recommended surgery, they were uncertain about Archana’s chances of recovery. Faced with this devastating prognosis, her family made the heart-wrenching decision to decline surgery, unable to bear the uncertainty of what lay ahead for their beloved daughter.
In the following days, Archana’s condition worsened. On August 22, 2024, she was declared brain dead, marking the beginning of a profoundly difficult journey for her family. At 10:30 AM that same day, Mrs. Ranjini, an experienced counsellor, approached Archana’s family to gently discuss the possibility of organ donation. In the Neurosurgery ICU, she provided guidance and support during this unimaginable time, offering a glimmer of hope amid their overwhelming grief.
Archana, known for her intellectual brilliance, selflessness, and impeccable taste in music, continued to touch lives even in death. After a long and emotional discussion, Archana’s family, deeply aware of her generous spirit, made the courageous decision to consent to organ donation at 01:30 PM on August 23, 2024. They knew that through this final act of giving, Archana could offer life to others.
That same evening, at 04:27 PM, the first declaration of brain death was made. A second declaration, following the necessary medical protocols due to Archana’s young age, was confirmed the next morning at 08:10 AM on August 24, 2024. In their darkest hour, Kaavya’s family chose to transform their sorrow into hope for others.
On August 24, 2024, Archana’s organs were allocated, ensuring that her legacy would live on in the lives she saved:
In their immense grief, Archana’s family made a choice that reflects both their strength and Archana’s lifelong generosity. Their decision serves as a powerful reminder of the profound impact organ donation can have. Archana’s selflessness lives on in the lives of those she saved, and her legacy will endure as a symbol of love, bravery, and hope.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Archana’s family and commend their extraordinary compassion in the face of loss. Their choice is a beacon of light in the world of organ donation, and we pray for their comfort as they navigate life without their beloved
