Art Programs For 5,000 In-Need New York Children

Happy Summer from Arts For All!

The school year is coming to a close, and we are so excited to tell you about everything that has happened so far this year! Thanks to your support, Arts For All has been able to develop exciting new arts residencies, partnerships, and showcases - all while continuing to provide free arts programming to over 3,000 children in New York City.

This semester, Arts For All partnered with Fil Doux Textiles to create a series of unique textiles-based arts workshops integrated into their classroom activities. In one class, students used donated fabric to create frames for photos they had taken earlier in the year. In another, students are combining fabric work with their social studies lessons on different world cultures.

Long time Arts For All partner Incarnation Children's Center is continuing to see success with the Video Creation Project. This year, students have created two cooking shows, a makeup tutorial, a narrated short about fish in a tank, and an interview series on happiness. Students at ICC have enjoyed this program so much that they are now adding two brand new Arts For All residencies on creating stop motion animation.

At PS76, students in our Artistic Residency Program were invited to visit the Center for Italian Modern Art. This fieldtrip was complimented by a workshop on still life painting lead by Arts For All teaching artist Ciara Ruddock.

And throughout the semester, students in Arts For All programs across NYC have had the opportunity to share their work with family and friends at both public and in-school visual art showcases, dance and theatre performances, and more.

In their short film Happiness, created as part of the Video Creation Project, students at ICC interviewed teachers, staff, and other students; asking what others can do in order to be more happy. One student responded, "Open your mind. If you don't open your mind, how are you going to fit space to be happy?" Thanks to your support, Arts For All is able to continue providing NYC youth the opportunity to open their minds and find happiness through the arts, and we sincerely thank you!

2019 is off to a great start!

In the first couple months of the year:

Literacy Through the Arts*has continued at PS15, PS163 and Hamilton Heights Elementary
Visual Arts students with Ron Chironna completed an art show at Historic Richmond Town (https://www.historicrichmondtown.org)**
Students in a Drama and Haiku residency, generously funded by Amy Losak, recently had a final sharing.
One after school Visual Arts residency has just completed and another one has just begun at PS163 both taught by longtime AFA veteran, Vidho Lorville!
Two Visual Arts residencies have begun at PS76
A Drama and Poetry residency has just started at PS163

...and it's just the benginnig of March! There are more residencies to come for the rest of Spring 2019!!

In December 2018, we completed a successful Book Fair. We're grateful to Barnes & Noble for hosting this fundraising event for Arts For All for the past nine years, and for donating a percentage of sales back to AFA. Thank you to all volunteers and those who made it to the children's event, which featured the Audience Project performance of The Magician's Assistant written and performed by Mélissa Smith***. We are working on reviving the same production in April 2019 for two youth groups that missed the show.

Thank you to everyone who has made a contribution to Arts For All through GlobalGiving. Every dollar greatly helps Arts For All provide more quality programming to in-need chidren all over New York City. We look forward to continuing to keep you updated throughout the year!

2018, Another Year Gone By

As we change the calendar from 2018 to 2019, all of us at Arts For All are thrilled to have had another full year.

This past year Arts For All's Artistic Residency Program, where professional artists teach visual arts, dance, theater, music, poetry, and film workshops to youth, continued to grow. Throughout the year, students learned skills such as how to paint flora and fauna living in New York State in Visual Arts, and through Dance/Movement, students increased body awareness and prepared for an in-school dance festival. Other programs under the umbrella of the Artistic Residency Program included:

Video Creation Project in which youth at Incarnation Children's Center (ICC) and students at Williamsburg High School of Arts & Technology (WHSAT) create documentary and fictional short films. In 2018, ICC created a sock puppet parody video of Law & Order, while classes at WHSAT made videos including one about a possessed doll.
Creative Works partners with New Alternatives for Children (NAC), where children worked for 10 sessions to create and perform an original piece. This year, NAC participants created a show called Two Sides to Every Story, which included an original adaptation of The 3 Little Pigs from the Wolf's perspective.

Literacy Through the Arts, a school year-long program at PS 15, PS 163, and Hamilton Heights School, promotes, reading, writing, and verbal expression skills through a multi-arts curriculum for grades K - 2. This year, each grade demonstrated a wide variety of skills through arts integration. Some examples include Grade K working on vowel recognition through song, Grade 1 learning the basics of making a story and creating puppets to tell stories, and Grade 2 creating original adaptations of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Thank you once again for your continued support of our mission. Without your help, we would not be able to reach thousands of under-served New York City children with our accessible arts programs.
