At the Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE (SHCH), we are delighted that our project to provide antibiotic treatments to poor patients in Cambodia is fully funded. Every donation has made a difference.

Our patient, Ra, aged 36, received free antibiotics at SHCH and expressed his thanks. 'I am poor, and I couldn't have found another hospital to provide free care to me like this one did.'

Ra drives a motorbike taxi in Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, and makes just $3 a day to support his young family. When Ra came to our hospital, he was in a critical condition, with a high fever and abdominal pain. He was diagnosed with a liver abscess and was treated on our medical ward until he returned to health. Antibiotics were an important part of his treatment plan.

On the road to recovery with antibiotics

Your gift of antibiotics is helping patients at the Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE in Cambodia.

Our patient, Koemly, 49, came to our hospital after experiencing symptoms for 3 months. He had a fever, and was experiencing headaches, weight loss and shortness of breath. Before arriving at our hospital, Koemly had sought care close to his home village in provincial Cambodia, but after a month, his health had not improved and he travelled to our hospital for further treatment. Our doctor explains that delayed treatment is a common challenge in Cambodia: ‘Our patients often arrive with an advanced health conditions and we need to treat most of them with antibiotics. Unfortunately, high-quality medicines are expensive here.’

Your donation through Global Giving helped us to exceed our intial campaign goal and provide antibiotic treatments to patients like Koemly. Koemly has now received free care from our experienced medical team, and his symptoms are being actively managed with high-quality medicines. ‘Thank you to the hospital and donors who support free care to the poor in Cambodia,’ he said.

Recovery for a young family:gifts matched March 16

Last month, SOUN Mao came to Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE with a very high-fever, severe headache, nausea and vomiting. He was suffering from severe symptoms of infective endocarditis-- a serious infection on the surface of the heart and valves-- along with other issues. Your donations made all the difference for him and his family.

Mao, 29, arrived with his wife Srey Peng from their rural village in southern Cambodia. Mao had been sick for many months and was unable to work. After a while, Srey Peng also lost her job at the garment factory because she was taking care of her husband. Thanks to the caring efforts of our medical team, Mao was able to undergo a variety of tests, including a CT scan provided by the nearby HOPE worldwide Medical Center and a highly effective antibiotic medication. Our laboratory was able to test Mao's blood to determine if any antibiotics would be resistant to his infection. Mao stayed at our hospital for 4 weeks, transforming from a young man struggling for his life to a smiling and grateful recovered patient who was very happy to be reunited with his daughter.
