Powerful Antibiotics saved Ngin Mom

By Phen Sovanarith | Communications and Development Senior Clerk, SHCH

With your generous support, the Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE continues its mission to provide free medical care to the poor and needy in Cambodia. Ngin Mom, 75, is one patient who received surgery, antibiotics and hospitalization from us.

Mom is a poor, widowed farmer from Kandal Province. She has one adopted daughter. They live in a small house together and work a small rice field that provides a modest income.

Mom started to feel weak for many days. Like many patients who come here, she first accessed medications from a local private clinic. Her adopted daughter borrowed $500 from a microfinance institute for hospitalization, tests and medications. Mom did not get better. This was a heavy weight on their ability to take care of themselves.

On their last savings and with the advice of a neighbor, Mom and her daughter came to SHCH by tuk tuk.

With our medical team conducting a full evaluation, Mom was not only diagnosed with an acute bile duct stone, but she also had a complex, drug-resistant infection (ESBL) in her blood. The infection required very expensive antibiotics to stabilize her. She received surgery and was isolated in a special area to ensure that she could recover and that infection would not spread to other patients.

“I would like to thank you so much donors who contribute to the hospital. SHCH has a strong history of providing service to the poor and I hope they continue forever.” – Mom’s adopt daughter.

Here’s a short video snapshot of the hospital’s work and your opportunity to make a real difference for our programs serving the poor of Cambodia.  All Global Giving donations received before the end of the year will be matched by SHCH's generous donor.
