Many of our children have had a bad start in life, but imagine your troubles starting the day you are born! SL is just one of many new-born babies that are abandoned in hospitals around the Philippines every year; the mother gives birth and then later just walks out of the hospital alone.

In these particular situations our social worker becomes a detective in an attempt to trace the mother or any other relatives, following up information given to the hospital upon admission and also using the media to bring attention to the case. Luckily a relative heard one of our announcements on the radio and came to Angel House to let us know that they are interested in taking custody of this beautiful little girl.

This looks like it may be a happy ending for baby SL and she will be able to stay with relatives, but we also have another abandoned new-born girl and no relatives have contacted us about her.

Your donations through GlobalGiving enable Angel House to rescue these abandoned babies and give them the loving care that they deserve; we can also use our resources to look for the parents and process the child for adoption if no relatives can be found.

Rico comes across as a bright and happy child who is energetic and excited about any new activity, but when you stare into his dark eyes you can sense the intense pain he holds deep within his heart. Abandoned by his mother at six months old, his father placed him in a care home and he was later transferred to a foster home for another two years. Rico’s mother then came back into his life and he returned to her custody; but after only a few months he returned to the care home after being bruised and battered by his own mother.

After visiting Rico a few times at the care home, his mother dropped out of his life again and he was finally referred to Angel House in order to receive the specialist care that we provide for each child. During counseling, Rico has said that he wants to kill his own mother and feels a deep resentment towards both his parents. Our social worker arranged a meeting with his mother, who says that she wants to be re-united with her son, but she will also need counseling if that is ever going to happen.

Rico is just one of the many children in Angel House that are saved from further abuse and neglect thanks to your generous donations through GlobalGiving. Your funds enable us to provide the counseling and compassionate care that heals deep emotional wounds and enables a child to move forward within a loving environment. Rico and all of our little angels are thankful that you share your love through your precious donations to Angel House.

When this adorable little boy was born his mother was only fifteen years old and attending High School.

Teenage pregnancy is a growing problem in many countries and the Philippines is certainly no exception; being a predominately catholic nation it has firm beliefs regarding contraception and abortion. Perhaps that would be okay if children were taught sex education in school, but that is another political and religious argument that means teenagers often do not receive the guidance they need. Even teenagers that have been raped, sometimes by a close relative, are often left with no choice but to give birth to an unwanted child.

Here at Angel House, we are the ones left to deal with the children resulting from these teenage pregnancies; babies that are often underweight and unhealthy due to the immature bodies of their young mothers. We encourage the mother to continue her education so that she can make a better future for her child; we look for other relatives that may be willing to help care for the child and make every effort to re-unite the family as soon as possible.

The mother of the cute boy in the photo is bright and we are hopeful that everything will work out well for them; she is still with the father of the child, but he does not have a stable income as a laborer. Together with your support through Global Giving we can care for this innocent child until the mother is capable of giving him the maternal love and good future that he deserves.

Our three Day-Care angels
Our three Day-Care angels

One recent afternoon I sat along with many parents and watched as three of our children walked up on stage to accept awards for their accomplishments in Day-Care class. As their teacher announced their names, I was proud to see how confident they were as they went along the long line of hands to shake, looking so beautiful in their best outfits. The vice-mayor, barangay chairman, and other important people patted their shoulder saying, “Well done girl.”

Yes sir, they have done well, and yes, they all gained an award. But ….

What you do not know sir, is that the young girl in front of you was left abandoned in a church doorway at the age of two, with no-one knowing her name, date of birth or anything about her family. This frightened and confused girl needed a lot of loving care to bring back her confidence and trust. She has blossomed into a happy, loving and caring girl who enjoys life.

And what you do not know, is that the next beautiful girl that stands before you suffered terrible mental and physical abuse from her own parents before being rescued by Angel House. It has taken a long time for her to work through her anger, confusion and pain; there are still times when she can’t handle her emotions and she will hide and make herself as small as possible. But she is bright and really responds to praise and positive remarks that improve her self confidence.

And what you do not know sir, is that the other cute angel before you witnessed her father beating her mother and abusing an older sister. Her mother can no longer provide a home for her and her father is in jail. She was confused and frightened when she arrived at the gates of Angel House, spending many hours looking to see if her mother was coming to take her home. Now she is settled and beginning to become more responsible and caring towards others.

And what you also do not know is that despite all odds, despite abuse and abandonment, they stand proud and confident, eager to learn and show everyone that they can achieve anything. As we travelled back to Angel House after the ceremony, the three girls were excited to show their awards to the other children and tell everyone about their achievements.

There is no doubt that a guardian angel was watching over these three children, bringing them to the gates of Angel House to receive love, care and protection. How they have fought their inner demons and grown into beautiful, strong individuals is a miracle. They now have hopes and dreams of a brighter future with a family that will give them all the love they truly deserve. These are the girls that will make this world a better place.

And that sir, you should know.

DC and JM walking
DC and JM walking

Something remarkable happened last week here in Angel House with JM and DC taking their very first steps by themselves; to see the delight on their small faces as they took those little clumsy steps was such a precious moment for everyone. Even when they fall down, they still try again and again until they master the act of walking on two feet, giving them a sense of freedom they never had before.

JM and DC are taking their first steps on the journey of life, to a better future with a new family that will love and care for them; a family that will walk by their side and guide them through the challenges ahead, holding their hand when times get difficult. Their new parents will nurture their hopes and dreams, giving them the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Of course, amazing things happen every day in Angel House; the first time an infant smiles, crawls, stands up and murmurs that first word. Or when an older child comforts a younger child in distress with a loving hug, or when a child that normally struggles in school receives praise from their teacher for an assignment well done. When a visitor is moved to tears by the happiness she sees in the faces of our children that have suffered so much, or the moment adoptive parents embrace the child that finally makes them a loving family.

Along with everyone that donates to Angel House through GlobalGiving, we celebrate each small step towards a brighter future for all of our children. We walk together in our quest to provide the resources needed to love and care for them, allowing them to take the first steps towards a better life.
