Many children living in Angel House come from single-parent families, where the other parent may be deceased, incarcerated, or involved with a new partner. No matter where you are globally, being a single parent presents numerous challenges, but in the Philippines, it reaches an entirely different level.
In many Western nations, single parents benefit from substantial government assistance, including free housing and benefits that cover food, education, and healthcare costs for their children. In the Philippines, however, single parents are only eligible for a monthly payment of Php 3,000, which is about $60. While there are additional government programs aimed at helping low-income families, qualifying for these programs can be complex and often depends on the availability of funds.
This situation means that if you lack sufficient funds to cover rent, provide food for your children, and purchase uniforms and school supplies, you must find work to earn money. Unless you have relatives willing to care for your young children, who will look after them while you are at work? This is the dilemma many single parents face, often feeling they have no choice but to place their children in the care of a center like Angel House, despite their love for their children and the heartbreak of making such a tough decision.
However, our priority must always be the safety and well-being of the children, who are frequently left to roam the streets while their parents’ work. Once the children are safely housed in Angel House, receiving nutritious meals, education, and healthcare, we can then concentrate on assisting the parents through collaboration with other agencies, helping them regain custody of their cherished children and reunite as a family once more.
Your donations through GlobalGiving enable us to provide care and protection for these vulnerable young children, as well as services that will improve the lives of their parents in preparation for reunification with their precious children.
