Dear friends,
A warm embrace from the Mexican Alzheimer's Center with our best wishes for you to have a wonderful holiday season and a great start to 2025.
This report reflects our four months of work, from October 2024 to January 2025. In October and November, we completed the activities of the women's empowerment project that we referred to in the previous report.
October was an intense month in terms of work and travel. As part of the project, we had the opportunity to visit Germany and learn about the experiences of care companies. Another very important forum was the national Alzheimer's congress that took place from October 10-12 in Fürth in southern Germany. More than 300 participants learned about and discussed advances in diagnosis, care, treatment and prevention. A unique event was the inauguration where the Advisory Council was presented, formed by people with some form of dementia who claimed their personal rights and participation in society. On this trip a collaboration agreement was signed between the Mexican Alzheimer Center and Prof. Elmar Grässel of the University of Erlangen on the exclusive application of the MAKS model (= motor, activities of daily living, cognitive and social stimulation) in Mexico. Congratulations!
In November we not only had the celebration of the Day of the Dead that is commemorated every year on November 1 and 2, but also the last training course of the year for women caregivers under the motto: “Knowing, accepting and living with Alzheimer's is possible” which had an excellent response and many caregivers were able to acquire new tools for self-care and better care for their loved one.
The start of the holiday season was marked by the Christmas festival that took place on December 13 at the Mexican Alzheimer Center facilities. Seniors, family members, staff, students and guests enjoyed the conviviality, Christmas songs, piñatas, games, cookies and more. On December 20th we celebrated the 6th anniversary of the Center with a team planning meeting followed by a small get-together. Six years of proud work and results!
We returned in the New Year with much enthusiasm to share the rosca de reyes (typical Mexican cake where some little dolls are hidden) on January 7 in commemoration of Three Kings Day on January 6. Hugs and more hugs after the vacations were from heart to heart.
In January the Center launched new information and positioning strategies. Every first Wednesday there will be a free virtual information session, every second Thursday the Open House event so that interested people can learn about the work, facilities and the MAKS model and every second Friday an inclusion activity. At the end of January, it was time to go to the market! The team - with the help of students and volunteers - took the seniors to the market where they were able to interact, experience the activities of daily life such as just going shopping at the market and learning about the offerings at the various stalls ranging from flowers and juices to crepes, fruits and vegetables and jarceria. A great day with lots of emotions and memories!
Help us help people with dementia enjoy longer functionality and independence through MAKS therapies - with your generous donation a change in the quality of life for people with dementia and their families is possible.
A thousand thanks!
Thank you and big hugs,
Your Mexican Alzheimer’s Center Team
