Dear friends,

we send many greetings and hugs from Mexico.

In this report we will talk about the activities between April and September 2024. It has been months of hard work and events to inform society about dementia, its timely diagnosis, access to treatment, care, prevention, information and timely training of caregivers.

It is with great joy that we share with you that starting in May we began to implement a project together with the German Embassy in Mexico to whom we express our deepest gratitude for this collaboration. The project focuses on a very important aspect of our work: the gender perspective.

On the one hand, more elderly women are affected by dementia than men because of the longer life expectancy of women. Since age is the only certain risk factor, more women live longer and therefore, unfortunately, also have a higher incidence. On the other hand, it is also women who are responsible for more than 80% of the care of people with dementia.

Centro Mexicano Alzheimer has put emphasis in its activities in the past months on empowering women, giving them tools and information, training them in specific care and accompanying them in the process.

At the Festival of the Elderly held at the World Trade Center in April, many interested people came to our booth, where they obtained information and participated in our lectures and cognitive challenges. We were very happy to welcome Luis and his wife. Luis has been with us for 5 years and his progress and the slowing down of the dementia is amazing, congratulations!

In May we participated in an event with the Chilean and German Embassies in Mexico by screening the movie “La memoria infinita” (The endless memory) and then leading a discussion with the protagonist Paulina Urrutia and the president of the Mexican Alzheimer´s Center, Regina Altena, under the leadership of Chilean Ambassador Beatriz Sanchez. We also celebrated our traditional Mother's Day on May 10 with a special online event.

June and July there were celebrations between Father's Day and the special event with the German Embassy who invited Mrs. Jasmin Arabian-Vogel, president of the Union of Businesswomen and owner of several care companies in Germany, with a very interesting conference about the differences in the models of care in Germany and Mexico.

August 28 is the day of the elderly that is celebrated every year in Mexico and this year Centro Mexicano Alzheimer did it in a big way, in Plaza Garibaldi, emblematic square of typical music. “Mariachiterapia por una memoria sana” (Mariachitherapy for a healthy memory) attracted many people to sing and dance with the mariachis of Grupo Amazonas. Congratulations!

September is Alzheimer's month worldwide and here we had special events and a lot of information and interviews in the media. For our big event on September 21 at the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Mexico City we had - under the slogan 30,000 hands for a healthy memory - not only many participants, but also an orchestra, theater, dancing, singing and many activities for motor stimulation, activities of daily living, cognitive and social activities. Each link and memory contribute to the collective memory to persist and bear new fruits.

We invited Prof. Dr. Carolin Donath from the University of Erlangen in Germany to the event and to some subsequent conferences, including the one given at UNAM and the interview in Grupo Imagen in the program Qué tal Fernanda - with Fernanda Familiar.

Among the many activities of these weeks, we want to end this report with the good news that Centro Mexicano Alzheimer has again a physical Day Care Center that complements the virtual activities with the face-to-face ones. From Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm we invite you to visit us at Pitagoras 545, Col. Narvarte, Benito Juarez, CP 03020, Mexico City. In a warm and friendly atmosphere, we look forward to seeing you, whether you are a visitor, an elderly person -with or without dementia- or a caregiver. There is care, prevention and training as one of the more than 90 women we have trained in recent months.

We thank all of you for your contribution to this work that without your support would not be possible. Thank you, thank you very much!
