Improve Livelihoods of 225 HIV-Affected Families
By Lucy Mathenge | Project Assistant
This project has progressed very well and our beneficiaries are very successful since they started the journey with us. Although the year started with many challenges, eventually the situation improved and all has been well. There has been rains since May this year after prolonged drought in most parts of the country. As previously reported, there have been a lot of farm produce and our beneficiaries are not left behind in terms of production. They have been harvesting and planting short term crops and enjoying variety of products from their own gardens. The income they have been earning from sales of surplus farm produce have been catering for other family basic needs as well as paying school fees for their children. We are happy that they have achieved a lot from this which has been made possible by the generous contribution from our friends and well-wishers. Thank you for improving livelihoods of our people. Those who received livestock have not been left behind as they have been enjoying eggs, milk and meat from chicken, goats and sheep. Their diet has also been great since they have been getting most of the animal proteins that they require most. During the distribution, we had agreed that those who received the livestock will share with the rest once the livestock get young once and many have received chicks and others are waiting for the kids and lamb from goats and sheep. This has been great step of ensuring that all our beneficiaries will have livestock once the chain is complete. There have been internal trainings on animal husbandly for the project beneficiaries where they are being trained various animal management practices an exercise which has been very important to all of them. We hope to have many more trainings to ensure that they gain more knowledge on livestock management so that they can also be training other community members. Thank you for all the support that we have receive and we request for more support to enable us achieve even more.

We are happy to report that there has been major changes since the last report. It has been raining since May and our farmers are now smiling after a hectic dry spell that affected them seriously. Our beneficiaries are not left behind and they have been working on their farms tirelessly. We were able to distribute seeds, fruits and tree seedlings as earlier reported. Trainings on climate change and environment conservation are also on-going and we hope our farmers will do what they are expected to do to improve the situation. We also distributed some livestock that is sheep, goats and chicken and our beneficiaries on this project benefitted they received seeds, seedlings and other planting as well as livestock and they were very happy. Their progress is very good and their health too. There are a lot of vegetables now and they are getting plenty from their kitchen gardens and they are enjoying balanced diets. They are also earning income from the sales of surplus thus improving their living standards.
This project has been very successful and we are happy for the good impacts that we have achieve. We are proud of our beneficiaries who have improved, healthy wise and financially compared to the situations they were in before our intervention. Some of them were bed ridden before our intervention but they are now very healthy and strong and so their families who were also affected in some ways. They have been giving testimonies and of course encouraging others who are in the same situation and feels discouraged and losing hopes in life. Thank you for your wonderful support and choosing to improve other people’s living standards.

Improve Livelihoods of 225 HIV-Affected Families
By Lucy Mathenge | Project Assistant
As reported previously, the prolonged drought in the country has affected everybody in the cycle. We had a lot of high hopes that the situation would improve but unfortunately it has been worst. Our project beneficiaries prepared their land long time ago with hopes of rains coming but that has not been the case and to some extent some farmers had already planted unfortunately due to lack of rains some seeds did not germinate while those germinated withered afterwards. They are now requesting for the support for the seeds and planting materials as they have nothing to plant. Towards the end of April there were some rains in some parts of the country. In Nakuru County where our beneficiaries are, we received some rains and farmers started planting expecting the rains to continue but we are now all concerned as the rain has not continued. Those who planted, their crops have germinated but they need rains at this point. It is very confusing at the moment as farmers are not sure how to continue. We remain optimistic that the situation will improve soon and the rains will resume as farmers continue planting. Livestock rearing has been a hectic for the farmers due to lack of pastures and as earlier reported, our beneficiaries are really struggling to feed them and also to provide water for the livestock. Next week we will be distributing seeds, fruits and tree seedlings to some farmers to support them during this difficult period as we educate them on climate change mitigation so that they can understand the importance of planting trees in their areas as well as environment conservation and protection. We also intend to distribute dairy goats, sheep and chicken as well to improve their worse situation especially on improvement of living standards. During the distribution of livestock, seeds and seedlings, we will as well consider our HIV/AIDS victims to benefit from this initiative and especially those who are more vulnerable. We are happy that despite the hard situation we are still in a position to support them and help them get started after a very difficult period. We appreciate our well-wishers and donors for supporting our beneficiaries and improving their living standard. We request for more support to help our farmers and beneficiaries especially on food and nutrition security as well as reliable source of water for domestic use and simple irrigations during the dry spell to ensure the continuity of vegetable production and water for the livestock. Thank you for your generosity
