AFK Mobility Equipment Service Update January 2025

Katherine

Unfortunately we have had to temporarily close our mobilty equipment wating list to new applicants as we are receiving an unprecendented numer of requests for support and we cant provide for them all with our cureent budget. We hope to open again in February,

On a more positive note we have provided more life-changing items such as wheelchairs, trikes and power assists this year so far than in the charity's history so we are incredibly grateful for your ongoing and generous support.

We recently heard from Katherine who is 21 and has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome - an extremely painful condition that causes hypermobilty of the joints. She couldnt get about in her old wheelchair and was craving independence. Thanks to our donors AFK provided a lightweight, easily manoeuvrable powerchair and it was delivered before Christmas and Katerine got in touch saying:

"Having my new chair has honestly been life-changing. It has given me a level of freedom and independence that I haven't been able to have in over two years, and I finally feel able to keep up with my able-bodied friends. I have more energy and I'm in less pain, and I have already noticed that I am less restricted by my disability. I also feel more confident, and have found myself worrying less about going out!

Thank you for everything you all do to help people like me. The work you have all done to help has genuinely changed my life for the better, and for the first time in a long time I feel hopeful about my future, and I know that having the right equipment will help me for years to come. I feel able to engage in more social events, and am looking forward to hopefully starting university next September to study Photography! I am just waiting for an interview date, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!"
