Six-year-old Finley lives with multiple complex conditions including Potocki Lupski Syndrome, Charcot Marie Tooth Disease, and left side hemiplegia. These conditions cause global developmental delay and significantly impact his mobility - Finley cannot walk independently and requires substantial support to move around.
Finley is a happy child who loves going on rides, watching SpongeBob and Mr Bean, and has developed a strong sense of what he wants to do and where he wants to go. However, his mobility limitations meant he was often dependent on being pushed around in a chair, which severely restricted his ability to play with friends during school playtime, explore independently, or simply go where his curious mind wanted to take him.
The situation was particularly difficult when it came to keeping up with his big brother Charlie. While Charlie could run, play, and explore freely, Finley faced constant barriers to participating in the same activities. This affected not just their shared experiences, but Finley's developing sense of independence and confidence.
At school, being pushed around meant he couldn't fully engage with friends during playtime or choose his own activities. Family outings like shopping trips or visits to the park required constant assistance, preventing Finley from experiencing the autonomy that's so crucial for child development.
With the support of our generous donors AFK provided a specialised trike for Finley. The equipment was carefully selected to provide dual benefits - essential physiotherapy while offering the joy and independence that cycling brings to children.
The transformation has been remarkable and immediate. Finley's dad explained the impact: "The trike will completely transform Finley's life. The trike will allow Finley to have Physio whilst enjoying bike riding, pick up his stamina and his confidence. More importantly it brings an independence to Finley which he strives to achieve daily and wants to be like his big brother Charlie."
Since receiving his trike, Finley has embraced his newfound freedom with infectious enthusiasm. He's been out every single day, regardless of weather, with a massive smile on his face. The specialised equipment serves multiple crucial functions - providing essential physiotherapy to support his physical development while delivering the independence he wants.
Most significantly, the trike has helped level the playing field between Finley and his brother Charlie. Now they can enjoy activities together, with Finley able to participate actively rather than watching from the sidelines. At school, he can join friends during playtime, making his own choices about where to go and what to explore. Family shopping trips and park visits have transformed from assisted experiences to adventures where Finley can lead the way.
The trike addresses Finley's strong desire for self-sufficiency while supporting his physical development needs. We're thrilled to see Finley pedalling confidently toward the independence, finally able to keep pace with his beloved big brother and experience the world on his own terms.
