Abortion Access through Technological Innovation
By Daniela | Project Leader
At Ipas Latin America and the Caribbean (Ipas LAC), we work to ensure that women and all people who can become pregnant have the correct information, feel supported in their decisions, and have the confidence to access safe abortion and contraceptive services when they need them.
We created and tested a series of digital innovations. These include "Sofia," our Safe Abortion Chatbot, "Te acompaño" our Chatbot designed for migrants experiencing sexual violence, a series of videos on Safe Abortion with misoprostol, and an Interactive Abortion Map to guide women to safe abortion services. Additionally, we developed tailored websites with contextualized information in several Mexican states where abortion has been decriminalized. These updated sources of factual, rights-based sexual information complement our decades-long work with public health systems in the region and abortion accompaniment networks that assist women and girls in realizing their reproductive rights.
Through our efforts, we ensure that all people have the tools and support they need to exercise their reproductive rights and reach their full potential. To achieve these results, we target our actions using our innovative technologies. Some of our key results include the following:
- Our YouTube video on safe abortion with misoprostol has received 5,362,357 views. 74% of the viewers are women aged 18-34.
- We reached 4,244 health professionals on our e-learning platform, primarily from Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, USA and Venezuela.
- Our safe abortion chatbot, "Sofia," has recorded 21,383 conversations and 24,320 interactions across five countries. The most consulted topics in the chatbot were medical abortion, with 7,885 interactions, and the use of mifepristone and misoprostol, with 6,946 interactions.
- The Interactive Map of Abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean reached 39,723 people and received 66,188 visits. This tool provides verified and easy-to-understand information on the legal status of abortion in the region. It is supported by 56 organizations in the region that can provide additional information on abortion in their respective territories.
- Our chatbot on sexual violence and safe abortion for migrants, “Te acompaño” has recorded 26,225 visits to the chatbot website from 6,635 users who accessed information on SRH, safe abortion access, and gender-based violence.
- The websites on safe and legal abortion in Baja California, Colima, Hidalgo, and Veracruz have received a total of 31,994 visits from 19,377 users.
