At Ipas Latin America and the Caribbean (Ipas LAC), we work to ensure that women and all people who can become pregnant have the correct information, feel supported in their decisions, and have the confidence to access safe abortion and contraceptive services when they need them.
In this period, we are thrilled to share with you a couple of stories of women who have benefited from the chatbot “Te Acompaño”. This tool was designed to provide sexual and reproductive health information to migrant women as they journey through Mexico.
Yadira G., (photo 1) from Una Mano Amiga, an organization based in Tapachula, Chiapas, conducts educational sessions for migrants where she introduces them to the Te Acompaño chatbot.
Having witnessed the migrant crisis become more complicated and acute over the years, Yadira reflects on the challenges migrants face: “from violence in their country of origin, to violence in transit, to violence in their point of destination,” she says. “That is why we at Una Mano Amiga are always raising the issue that people’s sexual and reproductive health must be present [in programs to support migrants],” she adds.
Elizabeth M., (photo 2) a migrant from Honduras, learned about the chatbot through a brochure highlighting its resources. She shared her experience: “It’s a very good, user-friendly, automated tool where you feel heard and free to express yourself. It provides the care you need and deserve at the right moment.”
Te Acompaño is poised to transform reproductive health support for migrants throughout Mexico. Since launching in September 2023, the website and chatbot have already proven effective at reaching migrants with essential health information and connecting them with care—so far with a focus on the states of Chiapas, Baja California, Tabasco and Mexico City.
This success is the result of collaborative efforts with more than 15 community-based organizations, including Una Mano Amiga, which work tirelessly every day to disseminate Te Acompaño.
Together, we are reaching more women and making a meaningful difference in their lives.
