In Latin America, barriers such as restrictive laws, harmful gender norms and stigma, and a lack of access to reliable sexual health information and services contribute to 39,000 deaths and many more injuries from unsafe abortion each year. Through this campaign, Ipas LAC will scale-up our digital innovations to promote greater access to safe abortion options and services for women and girls in Latin America. Our efforts will contribute to improve gender equality and foster resilient communities
4.4M unsafe abortions occur annually in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), contributing to 39,000 deaths in the region. 97% of girls and women of reproductive age in LAC live in countries with restrictive abortion laws. LAC has the second-highest teenage pregnancy rate globally, with 15% of pregnancies occurring in women under 20. Women and girls face multiple barriers to accessing contraception and safe abortion, including harmful gender norms, social stigma and lack of reliable information
Ipas LAC has developed digital tools that up-to-date information about safe abortion and contraception options and services in the region, including "Sofia," our Safe Abortion Chatbot, a series of videos on Safe Abortion with misoprostol, and an Interactive Abortion Map. We and our partners are removing the barriers people face in accessing safe abortion and empower women, girls, and their communities to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and lives.
This campaign will have a transformative effect by empowering women and girls to make informed decisions about their reproductive health, accelerating progress toward reproductive justice. These innovations contribute to efforts to increase women's agency, ensuring that their lives are no longer derailed by a lack of access to contraception and safe abortion care. These outcomes benefit women's communities by allowing them to to participate in their societies and their democracies more fully.
