Announcing our summer camps 2018!
Announcing our summer camps 2018!

Hi there!

Hope the summer is going great for you so far! Karama Organization is having a full program with activities in the rooftop greenhouses project; with new participants just receiving their new little gardens and 60 other ones now enjoying already a THIRD tasteful harvest. Oh and don't forget on-going construction at Karama's center to create more space for all our activities (we can't wait to show you!).  But not only that; Ramadan, the month of fasting, is also mid-way giving lots of opportunities for community iftars and other activities.

Not in the least, this Ramadan we will take part in another food distribution for the most needed refugee families! In the last days of Ramadan, we will spread packages with basic food supplies (rice, oil, pasta, beans, tuna, sugar and many other items with a long shelf-life). This will happen, like last year, in partnership with Penny Appeal from the UK! Let's stress again how grateful we are to serve our community through this great partnership.

Next up will be the Eid holidays, expected on Friday the 16th of June.

After the holiday festivities, we will soon move on to our next highlight; the summer camps! Due to Ramadan falling right at the start of this summer, we will start our first seasonal activities for the children mid-summer - but that won't spoil the fun for anybody I'm sure! We're open for any child from the camp to participate and are now waiting for kids to come and subscribe.

With the team making the first arrangements for these summer activities - what are your suggestions for a great summer camp?

Let us know - hit reply - write us on Facebook!

For the ones observing we hope you experience a blessed last week of Ramadan and enjoy a wonderful Eid with family and friends!

Sunny wishes from the whole Karama Team

This report was originally published on 12th of June - but comes to you with some delay...

Youth on their trip
Youth on their trip

Great you’ve opened our newsletter again! This month we will introduce you to our youth program going on in Karama Organization in Deheishe camp. Every week, 14 years old eighth graders join us for two days at the Karama center. Here we hold a program to educate them and give them the space they so greatly need.

In Deheisha refugee camp in Palestine, there are not many places or activities for teenagers where they can go to spend their time. There is a lack of diversity in the available activities; if you compare a teenager in Europe with a teenager in the Palestinian refugee camps you will find the same high hopes and dreams on both sides but not enough platforms for the Palestinian teenagers to use.

Here at Karama, we try to make ourselves a place for these teenagers where they can join us and put their energy to good use. This winter, we have developed a program of meetings two days a week with the teenage boys and girls. Our program aims to serve several needs that these youngsters have in their life.

First of all, the program continuously works with them on maintaining good education and study attitude. Them being students at the UNRWA schools, where classes can reach up to 40 students in each room, there is less time to address individual problems as the teachers focus more on work with the whole class. In the program, we provide extra classes, especially when midterm and final exams are in the planning. The students mostly request English and math teachers.

Secondly, one of the problems which a lot of teenagers face when they finish high school is choosing their next education, whether it be university, college or other courses. They have little knowledge of what is available but also about what they really love to do and what their skills and qualities are. Choosing a suitable education is a key in avoiding unemployment later on, which is a real concern with numbers of youth unemployment between 40% and 50% in Palestine. We included in our program workshops and training to help the group explore their university and job options, by help them know more about themselves; their interests, qualities, and skills. In addition, we organize educational field trips to hospitals, the court, and institutions to help them have a visual understanding of the job possibilities.

Recently we organized a trip to Maa'n lilhayat institution that works on economic empowerment of people with mental disabilities through handmade wool products. Both the residents of the institute and Karama’s teenagers introduced themselves and then worked together with the wool. Our teenagers said that it made them happy to join in on working with the wool and that they are happy to have been a part of putting a smile on their faces

This displays one of the last aims of the program. Raising responsible teenagers is one of the essential goals we work on. This means we try to enrich their belonging to Karama and each other, by requesting tasks from the teenagers in order to give them a sense of responsibility. This will help them in these crucial years into adulthood!

Thank you Bisan for making such an engaging program! And a big thanks to our donors we make it possible for Karama to organize such activities.

Get ready for some Dabka!
Get ready for some Dabka!

Hello, our friends from all over the world!

Welcome to October update - that will arrive with you in November due to unexpected work storms and family parties! (;D) We hope you are doing very well and your families are safe and healthy. Thank you :) our families are in general safe and healthy, though not always as you might have heard about the continuing assault of the Jewish soldiers on our homes and lives.

We would love to invite to a small celebration next week to celebrate the successes of Karama's Greenhouses project so far. Yes, you are all far away but we wish you could join us and at least join us in your heart! We will make a small party for our participants, our partners, donors and friends of Karama to celebrate the first months of harvest, the successful completion of training for the first 60 participants and open the door to the next round of participants to join us. We plan to include another 80 in the coming months, in 4 refugee camps in the West Bank. Good enough reasons for a little party, right?! :D Come join us!

But don't forget our youth! Every Thursday and Saturday a fixed group of boys and girls join us in Karama for workshops and activities...one of them being Dabka! This traditional Palestinian group dance remains a joy for the youth to take part in..and even more so a joy for the eye to see. So next news flash we might be able to share you some clips from the youth dancing around.. you're ready?! :)

Stay safe and stay in touch!

Getting ready for great summer activities
Getting ready for great summer activities

Welcome back to our newsflash! How is the summer going for you?

In Deheishe we finished all the Ramadan and Eid festivities (the month of fasting and subsequent festival). Now we are fully ready to host our first Summer Camp of 2017 (after working really hard on our greenhouses project all summer long + several kids’ activities in our center to keep everybody smiling!).

As always, registration for the summer camp opened after the program was published widely in the community, to allow all families in the camp to hear of the opportunity.

The summer camps are a great way for kids to be entertained during their summer break, but they do much more than that. The camps are a place for friendships to bloom and valuable life skills to be learned. Team play? Check. Creativity? Yes. Speeching? Check. Problem solving? Of course. National identity? Always. Global citizenship? Yes! All this is a very welcome distraction for the kids who have been woken from their sleep by the army’s shots and sound bombs for several nights in a row now… Because of Karama’s limited space available, we can take up to 85 children per camp and a long waiting list stands for the next camp to come.

You can help us organize these activities by donating on GlobalGiving! More donations will allow us to spend more on supplies for games and craft and cover lunch and drinks for our participants. With more support, Karama would also be able to take the children on trips, which are a crucial fun and developmental aspect of the summer camps.

The activities in Karama's community center also give a chance for some of the older teenagers to grow in responsibility and skills by becoming one of the camp leaders. Several youngster have been busy in Karama in the week before the summer camp, to prepare with the staff. They have come up with themes, games, trips and crafts that will engage all participants in useful activities. In the coming days, they will be role models for the young participants up to 13 years.

This summer break; don’t forget to share a word about Palestine with your friends or family! Do not forget your friends in Deheishe and let your community know your heart is in Palestine too :)

Love from Palestine

220 more greenhouses to be build with help from EU
220 more greenhouses to be build with help from EU

Partnering with the EU – will you join us?

Big news this time in our Global Giving news flash! Karama has started a new chapter in its work and signed a partnership with the European Union. Karama applied with our rooftop greenhouses initiative for funding under the EU’s framework for civil society support for economic development. And in February this year we could officially kick of preparations: we are going to take these rooftop gardens all over Palestine!

In the coming 4 years Karama will reach 220 families - not only building greenhouses on their roofs, but also establishing production units that will allow the participants to add more value to their products. Imagine; now women won’t only be able to profit from fresh cucumbers. But they will also work together to sell an assortment of pickled vegetables (a food staple here), dried herbs and tomato puree – just to name a few! By using the produce from their own roofs, they will be able to sell a higher value good and thus earn higher profits!

EU provides such funding to local civil society organization to increase economic opportunities for the most disadvantaged. However, they don’t fund 100% of the project. Karama will have to contribute 10% to the total project budget – which is a huge amount for a small organization like ourselves without any own resources. In the coming time therefore, we need to call on our network and supporters to help us bridge the gap.

These new steps in Karama will not be taken if you're not going with us! By bridging the funding gap, we will be able to provide at least 220 women and young people with rooftop gardens and trainings! More than 1320 refugees will increase their diet and health status and the whole community of 50,000 refugees, benefits from more accessible fresh produce. Let’s be a part of this movement, so we can spread healthy habits to more refugee communities around the world.

New project = new project website!

In our next news flash we will update you exactly about the funding opportunities we will offer in this new project. But be ready to sponsor some seeds, soil or even get your own whole garden in Deheishe! ;)

Thank you for your support always! We hope you will share our enthusiasm with us about the project. If you have any questions about the developments at Karama, be sure to hit reply and send us a message.
