More Grows in the Garden Than the Gardner Sows *

This is our final report  for Help Two "At Risk” Teens Learn Organic Gardening about the young men from the Cirendeu garbage dump who are enrolled at The Learning Farm, training to become organic farmers.

We were able to visit them when they were half way through their program. When we arrived they were working in the gardens, tending the crops. Andre has made a new best friend, Arman and Riyan is working on mastering English.

Their days are filled with a variety of activities including learning to use the computer, studying organics and composting, planting seedlings, caring for the rabbits and goats and studying  English and music.

Clearly Andre and Riyan are very different young men from when they first arrived at The Learning Farm in August. They have new friends, new skills and most of all a dream and goals for what they want their lives to be after they complete the program.

Over every bed in the bunkhouse hangs a “vision board”. Created by each young man, they are thoughtfully constructed and reflect the personality, hopes, dreams and goals for a better life.

While this project is now funded and complete, it is not the end of our story. XSProject has secured a plot of land in Jakarta for Andre and Riyan when they finish the program. Also installed on the property will be a hydroponic system for growing produce above ground during the dry season.

XSProject sincerely thanks our many GlobalGiving partners for your very generous donations to make this program possible. If you would like to continue to follow Andre and Riyan, we will be posting future progress reports on  www.globalgiving.org/projects/give-education-to-a-trash-pickers-child/.
