This project will fund 12 years of school for 50 children living in Jakarta's trash picker community. It will also help fund 15 of these students to further their education by attending a Vocational School or College. While attending school, XSProject assures these children will receive nutritional school lunches, snacks and medical treatment.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Trash pickers in Jakarta earn about $1.25 per day. On this meager amount, there is no chance that their children will ever be able to go to school and break from this cycle of extreme poverty. Children who are continually hungry, often sick and without simple school supplies have learning challenges and difficulty concentrating. For these children, being able to receive an education involves much more than just being able to attend school.
How will this project solve this problem?
At the beginning of each school year, XSProject pays the school fees for every child. The student then receives a package containing their classroom supplies and books. They also receive shoes, uniforms and backpacks. We monitor the students' progress, assure they get nutritional meals and snacks at school, clean water and medical treatment if they are sick. Our volunteer mothers mentor the students, help them with homework and create an environment to promote a positive self image for the kids.
Potential Long Term Impact
XSProject knows that when children go to school, they see opportunities for their future beyond their current conditions. When they socialize with students from Jakarta's international schools they learn about personal hygiene, nutrition, environment and social behavior. We believe that the social and economic impact to these children through education will empower them to break the cycle of poverty and live productive and meaningful lives as adults.
