XSProject has learned about two "at risk" teens who live at the open garbage dump and are too old to go to school and have no job skills. Their parents have asked us to help. XSProject is partnering with another GlobalGiving partner,The Learning Farm to help. The 4 month program will teach them how to grow organic vegetables and fruit and train them in business practices so they can start their own organic food business.Having a business of their own will give them dignity and self-respect
Since 2007, XSProject's mission, has been to improve the quality of life of Jakarta's trash pickers and their families. We do this is by providing 12 years of education program to their children. It is only through education that the generational cycle of picking through trash to make a living can end. There are some teenage boys living at the garbage dump who have no education. They are too old for elementary school and not equipped with the skills to obtain work. They are "at risk" youths.
XSProject is partnering with The Learning Farm.Located just outside of Jakarta, Indonesia, TLF is an organic farm that trains disadvantaged Indonesian youth in appropriate organic practices and life skills. They equip the young men with not just organic skills but also the opportunity to return to their own communities as farmer-entrepreneurs. The residential program accepts 40 carefully selected young men for their 4 month program. With this training, the teens can start a produce business.
The Learning Farm also provides business counseling programs to help these young men on the road to becoming entrepreueurs. XSProject has secured a plot of land in Jakarta for these teens when they complete the program. With their new skills, they can start their own business, help feed the trash picker community and be an inspiration to other "at risk" youths living in the trash picker community.
