Founded in 1979, Alif Laila Book Bus Society is one of Pakistan's pioneering literacy organizations, dedicated to ensuring that every child has access to books, learning opportunities and quality education, regardless of geography or circumstance. For nearly five decades, we have championed innovative and inclusive approaches to literacy, creating practical solutions that bring books directly to children. What began with Pakistan's first-ever Book Bus-an iconic double-decker mobile library-has grown into a nationwide movement that includes camel libraries, boat libraries, rickshaw libraries and community libraries serving children in remote villages, underserved neighbourhoods and disaster-affected communities. Today, our programmes have reached more than one million children across Pakistan. Working alongside schools, communities, teachers and government partners, we have helped establish more than 7,000 libraries while developing award-winning children's books, educational resources and early childhood learning materials that continue to inspire generations of young readers. Our work has been featured by Reuters, CNN, Forbes, the Christian Science Monitor, and numerous national and international media outlets, reflecting our longstanding commitment to advancing literacy, children's education and educational innovation across Pakistan. Our Leadership: Alif Laila Book Bus Society is led by Basarat Midhat Kazim, one of Pakistan's foremost literacy advocates, children's authors and the current President of IBBY International (International Board on Books for Young People). For more than four decades, she has dedicated her life to expanding children's access to books, libraries and meaningful educational opportunities. Under her leadership, Alif Laila has pioneered innovative literacy models-including book buses, camel libraries, boat libraries and rickshaw libraries-that have continued to serve children in marginalized communities and during national emergencies, including earthquakes, floods and the COVID-19 pandemic. A prolific children's author, Basarat has written 26 books and led Alif Laila's publishing programme since 1992. Her contributions to children's literature and literacy have earned international recognition, including the 'IBBY iRead Outstanding Reading Promoter Award (2024)', the 'Stevie Gold Award,' and the 'Library of Congress Best Practice Award.' Her vision has always remained unchanged: that every child, regardless of where they are born or the circumstances they face, deserves the opportunity to read, imagine and build a better future.
