Guitars in the Classroom

Since 1998, Guitars in the Classroom (GITC) has been inspiring, training and equipping classroom teachers to integrate music making across the academic curriculum through "song-based instruction" so students of all ages have educational, musical access & opportunity at school every day. Our work prepares educators to lead music, employing it as a dynamic tool for reaching all learners, teaching all subjects, and building character, creativity and community.Programs & materials are free.
Bring Musical Learning to Youth in Crisis
This project will give teens in crisis new hope through creativity. Students in transition from juvenile hall to school respond positively learning to make, share and perform music. The program serves as an on-ramp for developing literacy, communication and social skills. With approximately 70% of prisoners in California functionally illiterate and the high school dropout rate soaring, this project can improve youth offender's success rate in moving from incarceration to graduation and work.

Give Preschool Children a Musical Head Start!
Be a life changer when you empower GITC to reach children in day care and Head Start programs with hands-on daily music making. Restore Music in Rural W. Virginia Schools!
Bluegrass music is rooted in the Appalachia region of West Virginia where immigrants worked through times of trouble and found solace in their music. Today, rural parts of this culturally rich area are facing the long term effects of increasing poverty as it depletes the schools, wears down families and leaves children empty-handed. In rural Clay County, the music in schools has all but vanished and impoverishment is threatening to destroy the heritage of Bluegrass music for future generations. project reportread updates from the field
Give the Gift of Music to Children This Holiday!
This project will provide instruments and music training for Prek-5th grade classrooms in Title I (low income) schools that are lacking the resources to give kids the chance to learn. With your help, we will accomplish this by training the classroom teachers and special educators to play ukulele, sing, write and lead songs for learning. And we'll place sets of ukuleles in the classrooms so children living below the poverty level will have the opportunity to learn to make music in 2015 & beyond! project reportread updates from the field

Save Their Lives & Enrich Their Futures with Music
In some GITC communities, life everyday is a struggle for survival. Children living in poverty and danger come to school seeking nourishment, safety and comfort. Their teachers go far beyond providing essential instruction. In these places, GITC teachers become life savers, role models, bringers of hope. What else delivers immediate help to the worried mind and heavy heart more than music? This microproject will empower GITC to bring special musical aid to 3 such communities. project reportread updates from the field
