Songs for Comfort, Help, Hope & Healing

by Guitars in the Classroom Vetted since 2011 Top Ranked Effective Nonprofit

This project will empower mothers, grandmothers and "other-mothers" (nurturing children in their care) from our diverse community to share, document and help us collect songs to help students who are having a hard day, a hard time or a hard life take heart, find comfort and recover joy. From among thousands of teachers participating with GITC, we hope to receive, chart and record in studio, a brand new printable songbook with MP3s of the songs for anyone teaching or caring for young children.

Safety in our schools is a real concern for children and teachers. With lock down drills and concerns about school shooters on everyone's minds, cyber and campus bullying a reality, our kids have more anxiety than ever before. Add that to the everyday troubles from family stress issues- and for more than half, the impact of poverty- and kids really need a safe, healthy way to relieve stress, build trust & engage creatively for the sake of learning. Teachers need a way to help students thrive.

Songs that express, name and address big feelings and tough situations can lift students' spirits, de-mystify the emotions and bring every together. We have been told by teachers in our programs that they have sung songs with their students during frightening experiences in order to bring calm. From shoot-outs in the school yard to hurricanes, teachers want to use music to settle, comfort and empower students to release their fears- to keep positive. This project will give them these songs.

Long-Term Impact

A song collection lasts forever. Making it available for free will help it travel far and wide. As an online document with accompanying recordings and videos, anyone with access to a computer or smartphone will be able to learn to sing the songs. Once it exists, this collection of Songs for Comfort, Help, Hope & Healing will make a difference for teachers and students everywhere. These songs will stay with students in their memories throughout life, to be sung whenever challenges are great.
