Afghan Institute of Learning

The Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) works to empower all Afghans who are needy, especially women and children, providing them the knowledge and skills to care for themselves. AIL is expanding access to quality education and healthcare through community based programming, enabling communities to develop the capacity of their people. The goal is to create a foundation of quality education and health systems throughout Afghanistan which meet the needs of local people now and in the future. AIL was founded by an Afghan woman and is run by women, reaching thousands each year through health facilities, educational centers and training programs.

Peace and Human Rights for High School Students

Thank you for your support of AIL’s project. While the situation in Afghanistan continues to prove challenging, with your help AIL is finding ways to continue bringing high quality education to the young women of Afghanistan.

The staff of AIL in Herat has developed several short peace and human rights workshops  and has begun presenting them to high school students in the surrounding area. During August and September the workshop was presented to 376 high school students.

Additionally, the AIL staff has been presenting a version of the workshop to the general public at the AIL office. A total of 215 Afghans attended these trainings in the month of September alone.

AIL is excited by the feedback that it is receiving from participants of these workshops. They are taking the lessons learned and implementing them in their own lives, as well as sharing the lessons with others. While the concept behind these workshops can seem very abstract, they are producing concrete changes in those who attend them. They have lit the torch of peace for those in attendance, and they are spreading the message with all who will listen.

Don’t forget!  The holidays are a great time to share your passion for AIL and the great work that they do! GlobalGiving offers gift certificates which can be used to donate to AIL’s projects. Also, beginning December 1st, the initial donation made by recurring donors will be matched 100% by GlobalGiving. There is only $25,000 available in matching funds, so help AIL take advantage of this opportunity early!

Excitement About the Program Builds

Thank you for your support of AIL’s project. While the situation in Afghanistan continues to prove challenging, with your help AIL is finding ways to continue bringing high quality education to the young women of Afghanistan.

Word about the success of AIL’s mobile literacy program has been spreading across Afghanistan and around the world. AIL is receiving requests from students to hold more classes like the two in the pilot program, and Dr. Sakena Yacoobi has been asked to present information about the project at an international conference. We cannot wait to have the funding to get this project off the ground and begin helping more young women become literate using this innovative method!

More Books Being Written

Thank you for all you have contributed towards AIL’s goal of educating the people of Afghanistan. While the conditions in Afghanistan are still challenging, AIL is seeing positive changes in the lives of those Afghans that it works with.

We are excited at all of the positive changes being reported by the AIL staff in the area surrounding the public library that AIL is establishing in Herat. What was once an area filled with begging and drug use, generally avoided by the public is now a public space where families take walks and many citizens come to learn. The people of Herat are excited and thankful for the library and the benefits it is bringing it to their community.

In addition, AIL has recently published 30 copies of a handwriting workbook written by an Afghan teacher. This teacher realized that during 30 years of war and strife, the art of teaching proper handwriting and calligraphy had been lost and was seeking to share his knowledge with others and so decided to write this book. The manual has very good examples of proper calligraphy, and then space for the students to practice writing underneath. AIL is currently seeking $4,000 to print enough copies to distribute the workbook to all of its centers for use in teaching writing. With your help, they will be able to meet this goal and share this great resource with more teachers across the country.
