Leadership Development -EQ Training

Sixteen.  That's the number of young lives that have been transformed in only three trips by a thriving collaboration between Duncan Tree Foundation, Medtronic, Biotronic, the Scoliosis Research Society and of course, you!

We are gearing up for our fourth trip to Jamaica to take place in November.  This trip will aim to treat an additional 8 individuals giving them a renewed sense of hope for their futures.  In addition, we are laying the ground work for expanding our program in a part of the island where access to scoliosis surgical care is currently unavailable.  Finally, leading up to our next trip we will begin to enlist and coordinate the resources needed to train local spinal cord monitors and nurses.

These are exciting times!  However, the fact is, these initiatives simply will not be possible without financial contribution.  We need your help if we are to transport surgeons, technicians, support staff and implants to our sites in Jamaica.  Our track record speaks for itself, our partners are ready and willing, our mission defined; your financial support is all we need.  Donate today, join us in changing not only individual lives but a region's health care.

Since the our first trip to Jamaica last March, there have been eight beneficiaries of the Duncan Tree Foundation's Complex Spine Program, which targets scoliosis and other spine deformities.  We are planning to add eight more to the list of beneficiaries this April when we return to Kingston Public Hospital with our surgical team. The completion of this trip will put us past the half-way point of our initial goal of 25 adolescents! Thank you for helping to make this possible.

The past year has seen our Program grow by leaps and bounds. Through our partners Medtronic and Biotronics, we facilitated the donation of spinal monitoring and spinal implants valued at over $128,000.  Furthermore, our program is to be endorsed by the Scoliosis Research Society, affording us continued access to highly experienced surgeons willing to volunteer their time and skills.

In addition to meeting acute needs with these surgeries, we have also begun to coordinate a training program in neuro-monitoring for native Jamaican technicians.  This will enhance the standard of care during complex spine procedures by providing a critically needed skill that is not readily available in Jamaica.

The partners mentioned above are committed to helping us change the lives of young people in Jamaica afflicted with scoliosis.
