The Choco region of Colombia suffers the consequences of poverty, environmental fragility and decades of armed conflict. The first phase of the project, through an alliance with a private mining company, local paper company and a public school resulted in the establishment of a "Ludoteca" (Community Play Library) for ages 5-12. This second phase focuses on upgrading the school's multi-sport athletic field for soccer, basketball and other outdoor play activities (the target cost is $10,000).
52% of the population of Choco state lives in conditions of poverty with serious limitations of access to social services. The aftermath of years of armed conflict include children exposed to forced displacement and trauma which have a profound effect on youth's physical and emotional development. The lack of safe spaces and appropriate education perpetuate a cycle of exclusion and risk, limiting opportunity to develop social, emotional and cognitive skills fundamental for future well-being.
The Ludoteca, serves as a refuge where children can revel in recreational and educational activities that contribute to physical, emotional and social development. The activities offer possibilities to overcome adversity and break the cycle of vulnerability affecting the region's youth. The Ludoteca is a center for support in which youth acquire cognitive, social and emotional skills. This approach, demonstrated effective in Colombia, has the potential to improve quality of life and self-esteem.
The Ludoteca will contribute to the formation of a more resilient and empowered generation, offering youth a secure and stimulating space. Additionally, the project will foment a sense of community and responsibility involving families and the local environment. As the youth benefiting from the project grow, they will transform into more capable adults increasing access to educational and work opportunities, generating a positive impact on social cohesion and the region's development.
