Eleventh Activity Report YALP

Thanks to the donations received, we have been able to train and guide young leaders from all over Mexico in the development of antiracist projects throughout this year.

Training of the Fourth Generation (July 28 - August 10, 2024)

The fourth generation of YALP took place from July 28 to August 10, 2024. During these two weeks of intensive training in Mexico City, we welcomed young people from various states, including Chiapas, Zacatecas, Tamaulipas, Quintana Roo, Veracruz, and others.

The program offered workshops, conferences, and activities at key locations across the city. Thanks to the support of GlobalGiving donors, the participants were able to visit places such as the National Museum of Anthropology, which allowed them to connect with Mexico's history and cultural roots from a critical and antiracist perspective. We also strengthened partnerships with organizations such as the Mexico City Congress, Nike, and the Council to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination (COPRED), giving the participants the opportunity to learn in institutional and corporate environments.

These activities were not only educational but also inspiring for the young participants, who gained key tools to apply in their communities and in the projects they would develop afterward.

Mentorship for Project Implementation (September 2024 - March 2025)

After the training phase in August, the mentorship program began in September 2024, extending until March 2025. The goal of this mentorship is to support the participants in implementing their antiracist projects by providing theoretical and practical guidance.

During the first three months, the mentorship has focused on helping the participants solidify their projects by clearly defining their objectives, goals, and creating a structured work plan. The sessions, which take place once a month and last 1 to 2 hours, have been supported by mentors specializing in key topics.

This year, we placed special emphasis on projects related to sports, as we aim to explore the intersections between racism and sports activities. In sports, the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion are often shaped by racial factors, making it crucial for us to work with the young leaders in this area. The mentorship is helping participants understand how sports can be a tool to combat racism and promote more inclusive spaces.

The support from GlobalGiving has been essential for the young people in YALP 2024 to receive high-quality training and guidance in implementing their projects. The two-week training in Mexico City provided unique experiences in cultural and socially impactful spaces, while the mentorship program ensures that their ideas are transformed into tangible and sustainable projects.

Tenth Activity Report YALP

For the fourth edition of the Young Antiracist Leadership Project (YALP), we launched the call for applications from May 20th to June 23th, 2024. During the launch, we invited participants from the previous three cohorts to share their experiences and inspire young people between the ages of 18 and 29 to apply for this edition through social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter (now X).

Fortunately, we received over 60 applications, showcasing innovative projects and the participation of foreign residents in Mexico. Selecting the final 10 young finalists proved to be a challenge, as the applicants demonstrated strong preparation, and each year the projects become more competitive and creative.

We did the second phase of selection, which involved interviewing the 15 most relevant candidates. From these interviews, we will select the 10 participants who will be part of the fourth cohort.

Following the selection process, we will meet with the finalists to notify them of their acceptance and to share the activities they would engage in during the two-week residency. Additionally, we will conduct a social media launch one week before the project's start, introducing the fourth cohort with photographs and profiles so that the public could get to know the participants.

YALP 2024 will take place from July 29 to August 10, in a semi-hybrid format. The first week was entirely virtual to facilitate the participation of instructors located in other states or countries. Among the virtual classes, we were fortunate to have the participation of activists and academics specializing in antiracism, such as Andrea Ixchíu, Ochy Curiel, Alejandro Mamani (a member of Identidad Marrón in Argentina), Carla Escoffié, Fe Navarrete, among others. The second week was held in person, thanks to support that covered travel, accommodation, and expenses for the fourth cohort. During the in-person week, various educational activities and presentations took place, with classes held at different locations throughout Mexico City, such as COLMEX, Nike, Netflix, among others.

Building on the experience of our previous three cohorts, this year we also focused on the mental health of the participants, primarily due to the nature of the topics related to racism and the need to dismantle colonial learning. Uriel Valadéz, a psychologist and participant in the second edition of YALP, played a crucial role in providing emotional support during the two weeks of the residency.

Currently, the mentorship process is underway, which involves supporting the projects developed by the participants during the residency. For five months, specialized professionals will provide guidance to the participants to help them carry out their projects.

Nineth Activity Report YALP

In the last three months we implemented mentoring to reinforce the yalpers' projects and we financed some of them.

Mentoring

At the end of the project, we held an intern meeting with the team to diagnose what had been done and to provide feedback on the work.

The projects of the YALP generation were mentored by different people specialized in different topics. The mentoring methodology consisted of providing theoretical and practical support to implement the projects over a period of 6 months. It was proposed that sessions would take place for 1 to 2 hours each month, depending on each individual's availability. This mentoring was paid on a fee basis, covering 6 months of support for the 10 teachers. The mentoring began in December and concluded in May 2024.

There was also a consultation regarding which projects would be financed with the GlobalGiving fund. The remaining projects sought financial support tailored to their specific needs.

Project financing

At the beginning of February 2024, we approached the mentors to learn about the progress of the YALP 2024 projects. Fortunately, we had good news, since most of the projects began to define their objectives and to outline the path they wanted to follow with the project. The mentors were then asked to address the issue of budget, to find out if their project would require a financial resource for this purpose.

Of the 10 YALP projects, 6 projects received financial support because the projects were achievable, with clear goals and significant development. The remaining projects did not require a budget because the individuals were able to find a way to develop their project without the need for a financial resource

Among the 6 projects selected for funding and already underway are: training and empowerment for women from indigenous communities in Quintana Roo, workshops on racism and masculinities for people deprived of their liberty in penitentiary centers, strengthening of Human Rights organizations in Cuba, Fanzine on raciality, Anti-racism agenda in public and private sectors in Mexico City, to mention a few.

We are very grateful to all the people who have been attentive to the YALP 2024 project, as well as to those who have made donations. This 2024, we will be planning the 4th generation of YALP.
