Project: Young Antiracist Leadership Project (YALP)

  • Money raised

During the accelerator in 2021, we achieved both of our goals: we raised $5,000.00 USD and had more than 40 donors. We were also very lucky to have several recurring donors which are still contributing to our cause. Thanks to the many contributions we have had, we raised our goal three times since we joined GlobalGiving. Our initial goal of 6,000 USD was raised to $9,000 USD thanks to the immense support we had. We received many donations with messages expressing support to our cause. Many of our donors continue to give money as of today because they too want to see a second generation of YALP students.

Our mission has always been to support young antiracist leaders and their projects, so the fact that we, as of today, have raised beyond our initial goal and are standing at a little over $8,000.00 USD, this money will allow us to support more underprivileged students and increase the diversity and expertise of our staff. However, our goal is to reach $10,000 USD.

Also, in this 2022, we want to continue actively participating in the GlobalGiving campaigns to get more contributions to successfully carry out the second generation of YALP. Which will begin its organization next April.

  • Achievements

Since we raised the funds through GlobalGiving, we have been able to successfully carry out the first generation of YALP, thanks also to other donors such as Scotiabank Mexico, The Embassy of Canada in Mexico, and the University of Toronto through the Centre for Integrative Anti-racism Studies (CIARS’s).

In this sense, as the training was organized, the young people took workshops with experts for two weeks in November 2021 on various topics with an anti-racist perspective. At the end of this training, personal mentoring began with them to start implementing their projects.

Currently, 3 of the 10 young people have started to implement their projects:

1. Student 1

His project is to create an investigation regarding racial profiling in Mexico. Since his project was one that we as an organization was interested in, we looked for specific funding from the organization “Hispanics in Philanthropy” to begin his project and hired he as project leader. His project is now hosted by us and it is called the Observatory of Racism in Mexico and Central America, which will be launched in April, 2022.

2. Student 2

In March, he began to implement a series of workshops for his community within the collective to which “Cultura Nomada” belongs. The workshops will be held twice a month and will integrate various topics such as: Music, Whiteness, Digital Rights, Literature, Environment, among others.

3. Student 3

His project is to make a short film about the discrimination against africandescendent people in Mexico, specifically in the state of Guerrero. In addition to help him raise funds to film it, he has also joined the crew of RacismoMX’s documentary film, a project that is also a part of our organization. As part of our crew, he will learn how to make interviews, recordings, videos, and other activities related, that will help him finish his own project.

  • YALP 2nd edition

The organization of the second edition of YALP has already begun. In fact, this April we will begin a fundraising campaign in GlobalGiving. In the same way, in May we will publish the call for candidates so that young people can begin to apply and carry out the training by the end of the year.
