Afghan Institute of Learning Empowers Afghan Women

Dear Friends,

AIL runs 2 health clinics in Herat and one outreach clinic at a Learning Center. In addition, AIL supports 15 Community Health Worker posts in surrounding villages. In Kabul, AIL has 2 health clinics serving local poor Afghans. Only healthy people can work at their full capacity whether as a student or a worker or caregiver. Many poor Afghans lack access to good medical care and health information and are very grateful for the quality of care they receive at AIL’s clinics

A clinic patient had this to say, “ I was feeling tired and had a headache and  fever, so one of my teachers told me that I should go to the AIL health clinic. After giving me a check up the doctor said that I suffered from anemia and I should take medicine, which he gave me. The doctor prescribed some syrups and tablets for anemia and told me that I should eat vegetables. After a week, I went back to the clinic and the problem was resolved and I was sleeping better.  My appetite increased and I did not feel tired anymore.”

Health education is always dispensed to patients at the clinics as they wait to see the doctor. They may learn about health matters unrelated to their medical issue. Popular topics include sanitation, breast feeding, diarrhea, respiratory problems, family planning, worms, vaccinations, TB, and drinking water. AIL also provides in-depth health workshops on reproductive health matters to women. These women are now aware of what to do to stay healthy and what to do if they get ill or there are complications with pregnancy. This information can be life- saving.

1155 Fast Tracking Education for Afghan Women and Girls 

AIL has started the year 2016 with a full roster of education classes in many subjects as diverse as, literacy, English, carpet weaving, computers and physics. In the month of January, there were 9,682 students (6,132 female) in classes at 42 Learning Centers (LCs) in Afghanistan and 1 LC in Pakistan.  The health program has provided 19,226           patients with treatment and given health education to 11,854 people. Here is a story:

“My name is Somayeah and my twin sister is Masomah. We live in a poor family and we are both interested in learning, but we always missed the chance to study because people were laughing at us. Fortunately AIL’s teachers promoted self-confidence and self-esteem in us with great advice. Now we are happy and no longer ashamed. Our minds changed since attending AIL’s literacy and sewing classes. We also found out about the dignity of women in the community and we are proud to be twins. We also made very good educational decisions about our future.”
