Steady Economic Improvement for Pig Farmers
By Margery Poitras | Development Associate

Despite numerous factors going against the people of Myanmar right now, our pig farming programs are consistently benefiting those that are participating. Some pig farmers raise their swine for breeding and some raise them for slaughter, and many do both!
Incomes increase on average by $500 a year, which might not sound like a lot to you, but for a family that lives on around $700 annually, this almost doubles their income. More and more village members are interested in joining this program after seeing the benefits reaped by their neighbors. Shanta's pig farming program is ongoing. We will add new participants every year and support them with training, funding, and monitoring for the first 2 years. After that, they are experienced enough to lend a hand to new participants.
We love watching our pig farmers rise out of acute poverty, and share in their pride in this extremely impactful program. Other programs needing immediate support are our teacher housing projects found on GlobalGiving or go to the Shanta Foundation website to read our blog about other news.

Pig Farming Success Story

N.T.Y. is a single mother in Southern Shan State who earned about $600 annually from farming on leased land in her village. All of her income went to providing for her son and his education. She was selected by the women in her village to be on the Village Development Team upon Shanta Foundation partnering with her village. Through consistent mentoring and training with our team, she became an accountant for their Community Bank as well as the Farmer's Group. Then, she chose to participate in our Pig Farming income generation program and earned a profit in the first year. She is now a "pig dealer", representing all of the pig farmers in her village to sell their swine at market for a fair price. N.T.Y. is so proud of her accomplishments and now mentors other women in her village, helping them with leadership and livelihood opportunities to help them rise out of poverty forever.
"I've changed in many positive ways to take care of myself and my family, and to support the community as a woman representative. As my income has also increased, I can support my family more. All are due to the benefits of participation in village leadership with Shanta’s initiation, " she said with a bright smile.

Continued Success

Pig farming continues to be a very successful program for our village partners. Our staff on the ground are knowledgeable about illness, nutrition, and general animal husbandry associated with raising swine in Myanmar. Women have especially profited as the management of a small-scale pig farm is not overly time-consuming, allowing for other chores and family care, too.
Raising pigs creates numerous opportunities for rural Myanmar families- income from selling for slaughter or for breeding, fertilizer for our natural inputs program (that has also proven very effective for crop farmers in the same communities), and meat for the family. All of our pig farmers are dedicated to their animals, taking great pride in their business. We will add numerous new pig farmers next year to join this influential program that helps families rise out of poverty.
