While pig farming in rural Myanmar has had challenges in the past, overall, it is an extremely successful program in our partnerships. Here is what a participant from Htet Lone said about her experience.
“I’m the one in my family who is leading this pig farming project. I’m satisfied as I am able to manage our family finances very well, using the profit earned from pig farms. My plan is to extend my pig farm up to 30 pigs. As I usually gain 60,000 ks ($46 USD) as profit after 6 months, if I can raise 30 pigs, I would earn around 1,800,000 ks ($1,385 USD) as profit. If I would raise pigs two times a year, I would gain a lot of profit! I am so excited to continue my pig farming. I can’t wait to make it happen. But all these good things happen to me because of the support of Shanta. My heartfelt thanks and appreciation go to Shanta for taking this systematic approach with us, which makes much profit that we’ve never experienced before.”

- The Pig Farming project has assisted 223 pig farmers in 9 villages across three townships (181 in Pauk and 42 in Taunggyi).
- In 2023, 47 new farmers joined the project.
- According to the expense income calculation of pig farmers, the average profit per farmer is $ 428.
- 12 farmers(7 from Pauk and 5 from Taunggyi) are able to breed pigs on a large scale and earned $1,553 as an average profit per person within the seven months from January to July 2023.
The pig farm project has achieved significant success due to the organization's effective partnership and model, even amidst unstable conditions, travel and trading restrictions, and inflation. The community's strong leadership has enabled them to run and adapt the project independently, with only some remote coaching from the project staff. We call this success!

Why Pig Farming?
By Margery Poitras | Development Associate

- 303 pig farmers
- 15 villages across three townships (150 in Pauk, 96 in Taunggyi, and 57 in Pin Laung).
- 16% of all families in each village on average.
- In 2022, 67 new farmers join the project.
The Pig Farming program was even more successful in 2022 because of increased interest in livestock as market demand strengthened and selling prices rose, despite limitations and challenges in agricultural investment and access to resources from outside villages, as a result of the military coup.
Nonetheless, most farmers benefit significantly from the pig farming project due to the development of farmer-friendly business plans, the advantages of mixed breeding and fattening types, and pig farmers' compliance with the systematic breeding method.
Pig farmer committees are very powerful in most villages; they organize the group and provide basic medical care and peer support. When the project staff's supervision is limited due to security concerns following the coup, the organizational skills of the pig farm committees become critical. Thus far, they have gone above and beyond expectations and continue to make our pig farming program so successful in truly impacting families' livelihoods.
