Rewildings to the Aru archipelago | 2021 September

By Dudi Nandika, MSc | Director, Konservasi Kakatua Indonesia

Dear Supporters,

We are still going through some difficult times due to COVID an its after-effects in Indonesia. Nevertheless, we try our best not only to keep on going with our lives but also to look out for parrots in our environment. We (the Konservasi Kakatua Indonesia NGO) have spent the past months in the Maluku Islands, leading a parrot conservation campaign, thanks to your valuable support.

We have also received a grant from the International Fund for Animal Welfare global non-profit for the rewilding of several endemic parrots and cockatoos to the Aru archipelago, which were confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade. Thanks to our collaborators at Wildlife Messengers and your help via this campaign, we also managed to conduct an awareness raising campaign for parrot conservation during our rewilding work. Please find our full report with photos attached to this update.

So far, this campaign provided some important resources to our work mitigating the illegal parrot trade in Eastern Indonesia. We plan to continue this challenging work despite the ongoing pandemic. As the next step, we will publish a new scientific study on the status of parrots in Seram Island, Indonesia, which could lead to changing the conservation status of some endemic parrot species. However, we still need your continuous support in order to pursue our aims, so we would appreciate if you could share this campaign with your friends and families.

Please stay safe and vigilant and see you in our next update!
