In Pakistan, almost 27 million people are persons with disabilities (PWDs) - with physical disabilities forming a significant percentage. Mobility, thus becomes a huge barrier to their inclusion in society. NOWPDP has provided around 700 wheelchairs till date, yet wheelchairs remain largely inaccessible and unaffordable for the vast majority of PWDs. Thus, NOWPDP needs your help in procuring 250 wheelchairs to be distributed to the most vulnerable PWDs identified across Pakistan.
In Pakistan, the mobility of persons with disabilities is severely restricted due to infrastructural inaccessibility, inadequate public transportation, and lack of implementation of inclusive policies. These barriers prevent PWDs from accessing education, employment, and healthcare leading to social exclusion and economic dependency. The lack of mobility thus perpetuates a vicious cycle of generational poverty and marginalization which can be mitigated through the provision of wheelchairs.
Through this project, we aim to provide 250 red wheelchairs with unique features which are medically suited for long-term usage both indoors and outdoors. These wheelchairs not only allow PWDs to move about independently but also to access the public sphere along with all the opportunities available to them.
In the long-term, the provision of wheelchairs is expected to drastically enhance the quality of life for the beneficiaries. Through their regained mobility, they will be empowered to access healthcare, education, and employment opportunities thereby supporting their families and breaking the cycle of poverty.
