Tejiendo redes: cuidar, crecer y derribar muros

Como parte de nuestro compromiso permanente con las personas que viven con demencia y con quienes las cuidan, en este periodo hemos avanzado en tres frentes que se refuerzan mutuamente: el fortalecimiento de nuestra comunidad de apoyo, el crecimiento de nuestro equipo y la preparación para seguir derribando las barreras que rodean a las demencias.

Una red que crece

Uno de los pasos más significativos de este periodo fue el lanzamiento de la Red de Apoyo Alzheimer, una comunidad virtual a través de la cual difundimos información gratuita sobre los grupos de apoyo que organiza Alzheimer México I.A.P., así como los que ofrecen las instituciones miembro de la Federación Mexicana de Alzheimer (FEDMA). Esta iniciativa nace de una convicción profunda: nadie debería enfrentar la demencia sin saber que existe una comunidad dispuesta a acompañarle.

La Red de Apoyo Alzheimer se convierte así en un puente accesible para familias que se encuentran en los primeros momentos de confusión tras un diagnóstico, para cuidadores que llevan años cargando solos y para todas las personas que simplemente necesitan saber que no están solas.

Crecer para cuidar mejor

Durante este periodo también ampliamos nuestro equipo de trabajo. Este crecimiento no es un dato administrativo — es una decisión de fondo. Significa más presencia, más escucha, más capacidad para ofrecer una atención cada vez más centrada en la persona: más humana, más profesional y más cercana a las necesidades reales de quienes atendemos.

Asimismo, ampliamos nuestras herramientas de acompañamiento para familias cuidadoras, incorporando orientaciones gerontológicas y talleres de autocuidado. Porque un cuidador también es una persona. Porque cuidar sin descuidarse no es un lujo — es una necesidad, y atenderla es parte central de nuestro modelo.

Presentes donde se nos necesita

Estuvimos presentes en el Festival del Adulto Mayor, donde ofrecimos de forma completamente gratuita evaluaciones físicas, nutricionales, gerontológicas, de signos vitales y de factores de riesgo modificables. Cientos de personas tuvieron acceso a información y atención que de otra manera no habrían recibido ese día.

También participamos en el Congreso de la Federación Mexicana de Alzheimer, un espacio de encuentro con profesionales, instituciones y familias de todo el país, donde seguimos aprendiendo, compartiendo y construyendo los vínculos que hacen más fuerte a toda la red de atención a las demencias en México.

Una historia que nos impulsó

En uno de nuestros talleres de autocuidado para cuidadores, una mujer que lleva cuatro años cuidando a su madre con demencia tomó la palabra al final de la sesión. Dijo algo que no olvidamos: "Nadie me había dicho antes que yo también importaba en este proceso."

Esa frase resume todo. El cuidador invisible, el que posterga sus propias necesidades, el que asume que su bienestar es secundario. Nuestro trabajo es también recordarle que no lo es. Que cuidar bien empieza por cuidarse.

Lo que viene

Nos estamos preparando para Alzheimer Aprende y Actúa 2026, nuestro evento anual de difusión y concientización que este año llevará por título "Derribando los muros de la demencia". Hablaremos sobre las barreras — culturales, emocionales, sociales — que impiden que las personas lleguen a un diagnóstico correcto, adecuado y a tiempo. Porque el primer muro que hay que derribar es el del miedo, y para eso hace falta información, comunidad y valentía.

Seguiremos construyendo esa comunidad, un paso a la vez, junto a todas las personas que, como tú, deciden que nadie debería enfrentar el olvido solo.

Weaving Networks: Caring, Growing, and Breaking Down Walls

As part of our ongoing commitment to people living with dementia and those who care for them, this period has been marked by progress on three interconnected fronts: strengthening our support community, growing our team, and preparing to continue breaking down the barriers that surround dementia.

A Growing Network

One of the most significant steps of this period was the launch of the Alzheimer Support Network, a virtual community through which we share free information about support groups organized by Alzheimer México I.A.P., as well as those offered by member institutions of the Mexican Alzheimer Federation (FEDMA). This initiative is rooted in a deep conviction: no one should face dementia without knowing that a community is ready to walk alongside them.

The Alzheimer Support Network becomes an accessible bridge for families navigating the first moments of confusion after a diagnosis, for caregivers who have been carrying the weight alone for years, and for all those who simply need to know they are not alone.

Growing to Care Better

During this period, we also expanded our team. This is not merely an administrative update — it is a meaningful decision. It means more presence, more listening, and a greater capacity to offer care that is increasingly person-centered: more human, more professional, and more closely attuned to the real needs of those we serve.

We also broadened our support tools for family caregivers, introducing gerontological guidance and self-care workshops. Because a caregiver is also a person. Because caring without neglecting oneself is not a luxury — it is a necessity, and addressing it is a central part of our model.

Present Where We Are Needed

We participated in the Festival del Adulto Mayor, where we offered completely free physical, nutritional, and gerontological assessments, as well as vital signs checks and modifiable risk factor screenings. Hundreds of people accessed information and care they might not otherwise have received that day.

We also attended the Mexican Alzheimer Federation Congress, a gathering of professionals, institutions, and families from across the country, where we continued learning, sharing knowledge, and strengthening the connections that make the entire dementia care network in Mexico stronger.

A Story That Moved Us

At one of our caregiver self-care workshops, a woman who has been caring for her mother with dementia for four years spoke up at the end of the session. She said something we have not forgotten: "No one had ever told me before that I also mattered in this process."

That sentence says it all. The invisible caregiver — the one who postpones their own needs, who assumes their wellbeing is secondary. Our work is also to remind them that it is not. That caring well begins with caring for oneself.

What's Next

We are preparing for Alzheimer Aprende y Actúa 2026, our annual awareness and outreach event, which this year will be titled "Breaking Down the Walls of Dementia." We will address the cultural, emotional, and social barriers that prevent people from reaching a correct, appropriate, and timely diagnosis. Because the first wall to break down is fear — and that requires information, community, and courage.

We will keep building that community, one step at a time, alongside all the people who, like you, believe that no one should face the forgetting alone.

Historias de Conexion: Cuidar, prevenir y acompañar

Como parte de nuestro compromiso permanente con las personas que viven con demencia y con quienes las cuidan, en este periodo hemos puesto especial atención en identificar necesidades reales y puntos donde podemos incidir de manera significativa.
Durante este periodo, apostamos de forma decidida por tres ejes fundamentales: el cuidado al cuidador, la sensibilización para disminuir el estigma en torno a las demencias y la prevención.

Las demencias no son un padecimiento nuevo. Han estado presentes a lo largo de generaciones, pero históricamente se han asociado de manera errónea al envejecimiento “normal”, a términos como “demencia senil” o a la idea de que todas las demencias son Alzheimer. Estas creencias han contribuido a la invisibilización del padecimiento y a que muchas personas evitan hablar del tema o retrasan la búsqueda de atención.

La realidad es que todas las personas estamos envejeciendo, y aunque esto no significa que todas desarrollaremos una demencia, sí implica que podemos reducir los factores de riesgo modificables, estrechamente ligados a nuestros hábitos y decisiones cotidianas. Aun así, el miedo a la palabra “demencia” persiste y suele percibirse como algo lejano, cuando los datos muestran que su incidencia continúa en aumento.

Frente a este panorama, hemos apostado por acercar información clara, accesible y basada en evidencia para la prevención, dirigida no sólo a quienes viven con demencia o cuidan de alguien, sino a la población en general. Reconocer los factores de riesgo modificables y comprender que nunca es tarde para comenzar a cuidarnos ha sido uno de los mensajes centrales de nuestras acciones recientes.

En nuestros grupos de apoyo gratuitos, hemos comenzado a integrar de forma más explícita contenidos sobre prevención, autocuidado del cuidador y acompañamiento emocional para familias. Asimismo, ofrecemos conferencias mensuales que abordan tanto el cuidado óptimo desde un enfoque centrado en la persona como estrategias preventivas para la salud cerebral a lo largo de la vida.

De manera complementaria, reforzamos la difusión de contenidos en redes sociales, utilizando un lenguaje sencillo y empático, alineado a una comprensión adecuada de las demencias, el cuidado digno y los factores de riesgo modificables. Estas plataformas se han convertido en un puente clave para llegar a personas que, de otra manera, no tendrían acceso a esta información.

Una historia que nos inspiró

Durante este periodo, reafirmamos algo esencial. La comunidad es una de nuestras mayores fortalezas.
Una historia que nos marcó profundamente surgió a partir de un comentario en redes sociales. Una persona se acercó a nosotros después de asistir a un evento gratuito de difusión; se sentía perdida y sin saber por dónde comenzar, luego de que a su familiar le dieran un diagnóstico de “demencia senil”.

Nuestro equipo la orientó, le brindó información clara sobre la importancia de un diagnóstico adecuado y le explicó cómo acceder a atención no farmacológica, así como a espacios de apoyo para ella y su familia.
Tiempo después, nos compartió que las charlas, la información recibida y el grupo de apoyo fueron un verdadero salvavidas: una guía que le permitió mirar una situación que parecía un callejón sin salida desde una perspectiva distinta, con más claridad y esperanza.

Como esta historia, hemos encontrado muchas dentro de nuestra comunidad, y son ellas las que nos impulsan a seguir tejiendo redes de cuidado, acompañamiento y prevención.

Lo que sigue

Durante los próximos meses, continuaremos fortaleciendo nuestra red de apoyo, con el objetivo de llegar a más personas que necesitan orientación, acompañamiento y espacios seguros de escucha.

Seguiremos difundiendo información pertinente y accesible que contribuya a reducir los estigmas en torno a las demencias y su cuidado, promoviendo una comprensión más humana y realista de estos padecimientos. Parte central de este esfuerzo será quitar el miedo a través de la prevención, acercando a la población herramientas claras para identificar y disminuir los factores de riesgo modificables a lo largo de la vida.

Asimismo, mantendremos nuestro compromiso de brindar atención accesible e información gratuita a quienes lo necesitan: personas cuidadoras, familiares, beneficiarios y población en general. Creemos firmemente que el acceso al conocimiento, al acompañamiento y a la comunidad es clave para mejorar la calidad de vida y construir entornos más empáticos e inclusivos.

Stories of Connection: Caring, Preventing, and Accompanying

As part of our ongoing commitment to people living with dementia and those who care for them, during this period we placed special emphasis on identifying real needs and areas where we can have a meaningful impact.

Throughout this reporting period, we focused our efforts on three core pillars: caregiver support, awareness and stigma reduction around dementia, and prevention.

Dementias are not a new condition. They have been present across generations; however, they have historically been incorrectly associated with “normal” aging, outdated terms such as “senile dementia,” or the belief that all dementias are Alzheimer’s disease. These misconceptions have contributed to the invisibility of the condition and have led many people to avoid the topic or delay seeking appropriate care.

The reality is that we are all aging. While this does not mean that everyone will develop dementia, it does mean that we can reduce modifiable risk factors that are closely linked to our daily habits and decisions. Despite this, fear surrounding the word “dementia” persists and is often perceived as something distant, even as data show that its incidence continues to rise.

In response, we have prioritized providing clear, accessible, and evidence-based information on prevention, aimed not only at people living with dementia or their caregivers, but at the general population. Recognizing modifiable risk factors and understanding that it is never too late to begin taking care of ourselves has been a central message of our recent actions.

Within our free support groups, we have more explicitly integrated content on prevention, caregiver self-care, and emotional support for families. In addition, we offer monthly talks that address both optimal, person-centered care and preventive strategies for brain health throughout the life course.

Complementing these efforts, we strengthened the dissemination of content on social media, using simple and empathetic language aligned with an accurate understanding of dementias, dignified care, and modifiable risk factors. These platforms have become a key bridge to reach individuals who might otherwise have no access to this information.

 A Story That Inspired Us

During this period, we reaffirmed something essential: community is one of our greatest strengths.

One story that deeply impacted us began with a comment on social media. A person reached out to us after attending a free awareness event; she felt lost and unsure where to begin after her family member received a diagnosis of “senile dementia.”

Our team provided guidance, shared clear information about the importance of obtaining an accurate diagnosis, and explained how to access non-pharmacological care, as well as support spaces for both her and her family.

Some time later, she told us that the talks, the information received, and the support group were a true lifeline—guidance that allowed her to see what initially felt like a dead end from a new perspective, with greater clarity and hope.

Like this story, we have encountered many others within our community, and they are what drive us to continue weaving networks of care, accompaniment, and prevention.

What’s Next

In the coming months, we will continue strengthening our support network in order to reach more people who need guidance, accompaniment, and safe spaces to be heard.

We will continue sharing relevant and accessible information that helps reduce stigma around dementia and its care, promoting a more human and realistic understanding of these conditions. A central part of this effort will be reducing fear through prevention, by providing the population with clear tools to identify and reduce modifiable risk factors throughout life.

Likewise, we remain committed to offering accessible care and free information to those who need it most: caregivers, family members, beneficiaries, and the general population. We firmly believe that access to knowledge, accompaniment, and community is key to improving quality of life and building more empathetic and inclusive environments.
