A school is a child’s second home where they feel safe, make friends, discover their strengths, and dream about the future. But in Lakhimpur, poverty, early marriage, migration, and unsafe environments pushed children away from reaching their safe space. 

With your support, CRY UK’s Project AIM team has turned this reality around for thousands of children in 2024-25

Here’s what you have helped achieve:

• 4,228 children aged 6–18 are now in school, many for the first time in years.

• 115 out-of-school children were enrolled and began their learning journey.

• 11 Activity Centres & 2 Learning Corners welcomed 567 children with safe spaces to learn and grow.

• 317 child marriages prevented, keeping education from being cut short.

• 98 Life Skills Sessions reached 1,829 children, helping them grow in confidence and resilience.

• 100% schools now have separate toilets for boys and girls, shattering one of the biggest barriers to attendance.

In a village in north India, something deeply concerning came to light, children were quietly being substituted into jobs. While adults claimed wages under the rural employment scheme, it was their own children, some as young as 12, who ended up doing the labour.

The CRY team knew this wasn’t just a violation, it was a theft of childhood.

They acted fast. Families were counselled, six children were withdrawn from the worksites, and three girls were re-enrolled into school. The children were supported through CRY’s learning centres, and the issue was escalated all the way to the district and state level.

What started as a local discovery soon turned into a district-wide intervention. Through local mobilisation, persistent advocacy, and collaboration with officials, new guidelines were pushed, panchayats were alerted, and child protection in public schemes was prioritised across the district.
