Impact
Clean water is now available from a hand pump located in the heart of each community. Community members now walk about 500 meters to get their clean water instead of 2-3 Kilometers to fetch water from contaminated sources
Water borne illness is decreasing. Economic activity is increasing.
Overall health is increasing due to less strain on the neck and back from the long walk to water. Time in school is increasing.
Number of People Served
Kabawala: 1,200
Wabikokoma: 304
Cost per person served
$3.98
Because of the incredible value of drilling with the Village Drill our cost per dollar spent is incredibly low.
Summary
The Kabawala project was completed in December 2021
The Wabikokoma project was completed the first week of January 2022
WHOlives hired the Village Drill Crew managed by SUUBI Community Projects Uganda to drill each well for $3,500. WHOlives provided a $1,000 grant to each village and also extended a $2,500 loan which will be paid back over the next 10 months. This sustainable approach allows us to reinvest the monthly payments made by each village into the next project.
More importantly, this approach provides each community with local ownership and involvement in the project. We have learned from experience that communities who participate in the purchase of their water system take great pride in ownership and better care is taken of the asset by the community.
