Dear friends,
Thanks to your gifts, a handpump that had stopped working in a Dalit settlement in Ishwarpur, Sarlahi now pumps clean water again.
When the pump broke, the families who depended on it had to walk to other sources, often on land belonging to other households, to collect water for drinking, cooking and washing. For Dalit families in the Terai, that dependence often means waiting, asking permission, or going without.
With your support, our team repaired the pump and rebuilt its base. We replaced the worn parts, rebuilt the cement platform and drainage channel around it so water no longer pools at the foot of the pump, and handed it back to the families who use it every day. The photos and video in this report show the pump during and after the repair, standing among the paddy fields of Ishwarpur.
Every dollar raised through this project went into it. The pump now serves the households around it throughout the monsoon and dry seasons.
This is one pump out of the 51 we set out to restore. Fifty more Dalit households are still waiting for their broken handpumps to be fixed, and each repair costs roughly what this one did.
