A visit to Pump Aid's UK office

I was fortunate enough to be invited to visit Pump Aid’s UK office based in London – to talk about how operations were run from the UK side of the organisation and to speak to their enthusiastic fundraising coordinator Emily about how they raise much needed funds for their invaluable work in rural sub-Saharan Africa.

Pump Aid is a charity that helps to provide clean and safe drinking water, as well as proper sanitation to rural communities in rural sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular focus on making changes that are sustainable and lasting, to enable the community to prosper long after the work has been completed.

The project we discussed on this visit aims to ‘Provide a preschool with safe water and toilets’ in Malawi. Evidence shows that access to safe water and hygienic toilets can reduce child mortality rates by up to 35% and hand-washing with soap can cut the spread of water-borne diseases by more than two thirds.

The project is in its early stages but shows promise at being able to ensure that young children are able to have their basic needs met to enable them to finish their education and live happy and healthy lives.

Although I did not visit the project in Malawi directly, Emily was able to talk me through the work that was taking place and where the donor’s funds were going. We also talked through the different ways in which Pump Aid are acting to expand their donor base and increase their funding for this project – all of which are looking very promising!

The staff at Pump Aid were very welcoming, and it was clear that they were very competent at what they are doing to provide the much needed support to the projects in Africa. I wish them the best of luck with this project and would recommend anyone to donate!
