Help 500 flood victim youth with vocational skills

Summary

Communities within the Shai-Osudoku district in Ghana were severely affected with flooding due to a major dam spillage. Thousands of households were destroyed and this left the youth who were mainly farmers with no other skills very devastated. The project aims to equip 500 youths with employable skills in sewing, baking, I.C.T carpentry, masonry etc. This will empower them to secure sustainable livelihoods and foster long-term economic stability in the communities while building resilience.

Challenge

The Akosombo dam spillage in October 2023 affected thousands of communities within the Shai-Osudoku district in Ghana. The youth in these communities who mainly relied on farming and fishing are left with no other source of income. They do not have alternative skills to rely on.Their Families have been affected by this disaster, leaving little support available for the young people. Most people lost almost all their belongings and in some cases their houses were washed away.

Solution

This project will empower 500 young people by helping them discover their passions and turn them into profitable skills. Trained experts will guide these youths in mastering their chosen skills and starting their own businesses to bring sustainability. To ensure ongoing support and opportunities, a permanent vocational centre will be established in the Tokpo community which will serve as vocational training centre to train the youth in skills like sewing, baking, I.C.T, Carpentry, masonry etc.

Long-Term Impact

This project aims to alleviate poverty in the long term by equipping not only the 500 youth to be trained but the vocational training centre will serve as a permanent facility for training other youth. The trainees will have the opportunity to mentor other young people, fostering a cycle of skill development and economic growth in the communities. The project will also reduce unemployment which is a major problem since trainees will become self employed and also employ other people.
