Querida Comunidad,

UWC Costa Rica is only possible thanks to a community of giving.  This is why, in the spirit of joy, excitement and reconnection of our new school year, let us take a moment to celebrate with you a few of the milestones you inspired in our 2021-2022 school year:

  • We not only reached but surpassed our Impact Fund goal raising more than $400,000 for UWC Costa Rica!
  • Brought together an intentionally diverse community with 70+ nationalites represented on campus between students and educators and gave 82% of students the scholarship support they needed.
  • Empowered 11 community action projects across 6 provinces of Costa Rica.
  • Achieved a 93% IB diploma pass rate in the Class of 2022--where 100% of students who pursued university admission received at least one offer.
  • Raised $60,000+ for our emergency Ukraine Scholarship Fund to ensure that war did not take away our Ukrainian and Belarussian students' UWC dream.
  • And of course, we honored and celebrated our 15 Anniversary while getting excited for our ambitious plans for our future.

None of this would be possible without you!

As we start a new school year, we are closing this GlobalGiving project page to open a new one that reflects all the exciting plans lined up for our 2022-2023 school year as we start our journey to place Sustainability at the heart of UWC Costa Rica through our Sustainability Framework and new Strategic Plan.  Click here to learn more.  We hope to continue counting on your support this news school year!

Con gratitud,

Jose Pablo Rojas-Brewer

Dearest community,

As we prepare our campus to greet our returning Second Years and educators and also welcome 119 new First Year students and the new educators to our campus, we also would like to remember and celebrate the closing of a very successful and unifying 15th Anniversary year.

HONOR OUR STORY

During this anniversary year, we honored the College's alumni, staff members, board members, donors, friends, and families who have made it possible to accomplish this 15-year milestone.  Proudly, we finished the academic year with the graduation of 76 students from the Class of 2022 who joined the worldwide alumni network.

We shared the story of the beginning of the College and its legacy, thanked the educators who have been with us for more than 15 years, and cheered for the more than 1,200 alumni who helped us grow into who we are today and make us proud of where their lives are taking them.  We also honored the members who gave us their time and passion for making us a stronger, successful College, and we remembered all the people who are no longer with us but will forever stay in our hearts.

CELEBRATE WHO WE ARE

We celebrated what UWC stands for on UWC Day and the capacity of the Second Year students to question where their knowledge comes from at the TOK Exhibition.  We also celebrated the network created to build and improve political relationships during MUN and, finally, the creative talent the students displayed at their Art Exhibition Show.

We want to thank everyone involved during our yearl-long celebration, especially all of the educators and students who actively planned and participated in each celebration, including the exciting and emotional on-campus celebration in March.  Our special guest, Faith Abiodun, Executive Director of UWC International, said "The joyful atmosphere created by students, faculty and staff, management team, board members and volunteers, was just wonderful (...) I was struck by the ownership that each of them demonstrated.  It was excellence in practice, and I know that the same applies at each of our schools and colleges."

As the UWC mission says, we make education a force to unite people, nations, and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.  These 15 years were just the beginning.  All that we have accomplished is through the support, dedication, and energy of our very large "village" of alumni, students, families, the Board, advocates, and the committed educators and staff from all corners of the globe.

GET EXCITED FOR THE FUTURE

We are committed to continuing to work towards a sustainable campus.  With the publication of the Sustainability Framework, we will highlight and push all possible efforts this year toward these goals.  Stay tuned to our newsletters and social media channels, where we will share tips and best practices you can implement.  We officially launched our Strategic Plan and continue working on the New Campus project.

Thank you for bringing joy, unity, and hope to us and the world.  We renew our dedication this year to support our community on our personal and collective journey of growth and discovery.  These are challenging times in the world.  Never has the need been greater for nurturing and educating young people to prepare to be ethical, compassionate leaders in the smallest stages and large ones.  We are on this journey together.  Let's have a great beginning to this new school year!

Querida Comunidad,

I am so excited to share some significant updates regarding UWC and UWC Costa Rica.  It is important to pause and celebrate accomplishments, especially those that honor our legacy and invite us to look forward to a more positively optimistic future.

UWC International published its Annual Review.  This is a wonderful complement to our Impact Report and we invite you to take a moment to read and celebrate the significant accomplishments that you make possible here at UWC Costa Rica and movement-wide.  This is the impact you inspire through your giving.

We are also proud to announce that Faith Abiodun (new UWC International Executive Director) and Dr. Musimbi Kanyoro (Chair UWC International Board) will both join us here on our campus for the celebration of the 15th Anniversary on March 19th--more details coming up soon!

Last week, we kicked off the exciting news of UWC's nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize!  Even though 95 organizations were nominated for the Prize this year, we feel so proud to know that the mission and vision of UWC are being celebrated and amplified this way.  As members of the UWC Costa Rica community, this honor belongs to all of us, and this recognition does not come in vain.  Each day our purpose is guided by the UWC mission and every one of us makes this positive and more peaceful impact tangible--so thank YOU for being part of this movement.  We couldn't do it without you!

Help us spread and celebrate this exciting news.  Tell your friends and family about UWC Costa Rica.  And why not, invite them to join you in supporting our work to shape a more peaceful world through empathy by looking beyond prejudice and labels and instead of connecting through our shared humanity to address local and global challenges.

Remember you can support UWC Costa Rica again at https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/uwccostarica22/

¡Muchas gracias!

Querida Comunidad,

Can you believe that it is 2022 already?  Here is a list of things that have happened at UWC Costa Rica the past couple of months:

  • In November, we celebrated Queer Week, including insightful conversations about Drag Culture, with guest performer BeRoxx, and transness with guest speaker Victoria Rovira. Click here for pictures!
  • Most students returned home or traveled around Costa Rica for December Break this year, and now they are starting a new semester.  The students that remained on campus or stayed with host families during the holidays spent their days off resting, going on hikes, traveling to farms and beaches around Costa Rica. Here are some pictures!

Your generosity and unwavering support empower us to continue living our mission of making education a force to unite and transform!  If you haven’t already, make sure to check out the  2020-2021 Impact Report to learn all about the impact you inspire.

Enviandoles un saludo muy cordial,
