Unlocking Love Film Screenings Results

By Juliana Marcal | Project Leader

The chngemakers who participated in Ba Futuru’s program finally successfully delivered 192 unlocking love film series screenings and viewer group discussions in the municipalities of Ermera, Bobonaro and Viqueque in Timor-Leste. The project team has reached the target audience with a total participants 3,840 was achieved.

Out of the total 3,840 participants, 2,174 are women and 1,666 are men, coming from various villages in the target municipalities.

Specific efforts were made to engage with a cross-section of participants. They ranged from school students, youths, parents, and local authorities of the villages in the target municipalities. The activities were also attended by persons with disabilities as well as members of the LGBTIQ+ community.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNICEF Representative took part in a film screening and community discussion event on  June 20th, 2022 in Railaco, Ermera

Below is a quote from one of the participants that identified himself as a member of the LGBTI community living in Bobonaro municipality, aged 27:

“Through these activities, I learned a lot. In my life, I am sometimes discriminated against by my community because my sexual orientation is different. I fight to live without discrimination, and I think I can’t. It is too difficult for me. My parents do not accept me being the other sex- I have lots of friends who stand with me to fight back. They have told me that I have to be stronger to stay where I am because my life is my world and no one can change and no one can be decided what I can do. I have my own life and my own world that no one can lead for me and no one can be decided for me. These activities are very special for me and others because I noticed after the screening some of my friends slowly change their minds, they not call me “Mamar” (a pejorative term used to describe someone who displays feminine traits) anymore but they call me by my name and I think a few of them start to respect me”.
