This project will take place in Covalima & Ermera municipalities, and will engage with mothers who are among the most marginalized in the country.
Timorese women and children are disproportionately affected by widespread poverty and many live under constant risk of domestic violence. A 2016 Nabilan Health and Life Experiences Baseline Study found that 59% of women who have been in a relationship have experienced physical and/or sexual violence. Victims of GBV are often prevented from engaging in economic activities, and if they are able to earn an income, often have to cede control of earnings to their abusers.
This project works to not only economically empower women, but build up their participation in financial decision making. Women that have better access to income have been proven to provide better access to more nutritious foods for their children. This project would work to support and empower women through domestic violence prevention and victim support activities. This project will empower women to participate more fully as effective decision-makers in their families and communities.
